My thoughts so far...

This show is currently airing in the UK, after a slight delay from the U.S run of the series. We're up to episode 9, so careful for giving me spoilers in any comments.

So, after reading reviews and comments on here, I was a bit pessimistic and almost forgot about the show. Then the first few episodes started to air here, finally, and I kind of understood the criticism. It feels a bit of a 'cheap knock off', like a tribute band, and that feeling doesn't go away for most of the following 5ish episodes.

But having said that, I've kind of accepted it for what it is and look past some of the dodgy acting from its younger stars. Thats one of the main bones of contention that I have read on here, and I can certainly see where people are coming from, but thankfully (IMO) the writing and intertwining stories help district from that slightly. Although some of the characters story arcs feel boring, most of them have intrigue and are cleverly pieced together.

The two part mid season story of Hiro and Noah time-travelling back and forth through different events and locations felt straight from the original series and had so many elements that were special about those classic Heroes episodes. The next episode (Ep.9), which we have just seen in the UK was a nice follow up, and builds the story nicely to what I hope is a satisfying and interesting conclusion to this mini-series.

Having enjoyed this series more than I expected and because I see so much potential, I was disappointed to hear that any follow up series has been cancelled.

I'll keep watching this reboot until the end and offer my thoughts again in 4 episodes time. I see most don't like the finale.....

Did you watch it all then? I just finished the finale and I can see why people didn't like it, it all felt a bit anti-climatic in the end. I think it could have benefited from a couple more episodes, rather than rush everything in the last one.

That being said, I don't think the series was as bad as people made out and overall I've quite enjoyed it. In the early episodes, it definitely had some of the feel of the original series although I did think the last few episodes, where HRG wasn't involved, were the more lacklustre - I don't think the young cast had the gravitas of Jack Coleman (or Masi Oka, Cristine Rose etc).

I thought Robbie Kay was pretty good but those playing his sister, Ren and his girlfriend were all a bit bland. Judith Shekoni was awful, as was Ryan Guzman who played Carlos (a fairly pointless character all round). Quentin was probably my favourite new character and I enjoyed the Harris.

I thought the storyline got a bit muddled at points but I enjoyed all the callbacks to the original series and loved seeing old characters like The Haitian, Mohinder, Matt Parkman (he was particularly good) and Micah (whom I didn't realise till the last episode it was the same actor!)

I would have definitely watched a second series but would have liked it to concentrate more on older characters, rather than a young cast. It seemed like from the ending there was a chance of it carrying on but it did look like it would be based on Tommy (Nathan) and Malina, so maybe that wouldn't have been so good. Fingers crossed there's a chance another channel could pick it up at some point - I still think there's some mileage left in the franchise yet, if they could get some decent actors and a good storyline. Such a pity they couldn't get Zachary Quinto back, that would probably have been a major draw for vintage fans!

Yes, I've seen the finale this afternoon, there were a few bits I was confused with that perhaps felt convoluted. When Nathan/Tommy was in the EverNow prison and he could see his memories and 'learnt how to be in two places at once I thought was a bit too far fetched, although in some ways 'delightfully whimsical' considering the nature of the show. Sometimes things in these kind of shows don't need to make complete sense or be fully 'explored', but perhaps this show fell apart somewhat when rushing through some of the concepts.

As I think I said in my initial post, all the interweaving plot-lines and future/past landscape were very well crafted, I stand by that having now watched the remaining 3 or 4 episodes :)

Having only 13 episodes and no chance at a second season or further revival, it was probably doomed to feel a bit muddled at times, as I'm sure with a full season (20 odd episodes) or a second season, they would have spaced things out or just wrapped things up in the second season. They had to leave some questions, otherwise what would they have done, had they got approval for further episodes/Seasons? For a 13 episode, one-off ('Event' mini series) revival, It was not bad at all and like you say Never Say Never, when it comes to another channel picking this up in the future. It still has "mileage" definitely :)

I agree the two places things wasn't really explained but as you said I'm willing to overlook the "how" because this is sci-fi, so there's never a truly realistic explanation anyway, it's all just theory.

I think the story was the weak link because it didn't flow particularly well, things seemed to be a bit all over the place - although I thought the overall concept of it was quite cool and I enjoyed the way in which they used the past, present and future settings (especially in that one episode that went back to explain June 13th).

Aside from Pointless Carlos (who did very little over the whole series), the weakest character was probably Melina - I don't know whether it was the actress or her character or the writing but she just came off as a little dull and uninteresting for someone who was a main component in saving the world.

I enjoyed the show though and was disappointed when I learned a few weeks ago it was a limited run and wouldn't be back. It always bugs me that sci-fi is quite clearly a niche market and has a certain demographic of fans, yet the networks judge the viewing figures as though they expect it to be mass market. There's not many over the years that are big commercial shows - I can only really think of The X Files, Lost and V (the original).

Perhaps if they concentrated on less episodes, the costs wouldn't be so high and they could still make a quality show (and a finale - instead of ending them half way through, which happens so often). I prefer a show that has a full story in place before it airs, so it doesn't go awry in the middle as they run out of ideas or something that has limited episodes but films in advance, so they might as well air all that has been made.

Anyway, fingers crossed for more Heroes at some point. For now, I've just ordered the S1-4 boxset and am going to go back and watch the originals again.
