"Wannabe" wasn't released in the U.S. until January of 1997

But the Halloween episode takes place in October of 1996 and the high school girls are dressed like the Spice Girls and they sing a lick from "Wannabe" on their way out of the party. The writers must have just looked up "pop culture in 1996" or something and accidentally sourced a Canadian website. "Wannabe" was released in 1996 in the UK and all over Europe and Canada, but not in the U.S until January 1997. Ninth graders in Orlando, Florida in 1996 would likely not be aware of the UK and world music scene. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wannabe_(song)#Release_and_promotion

That's still much closers than the mess THE GOLDBERGS makes of the 1980s.

you do know the whole point of the pop references in that show are purposely inaccurate?

reply

Nope, the UPN special was in 1997. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1997-11-20/features/9711200355_1_spice-girls-upn-fledgling-network And even if the Spice Girls were "on the scene" in 1995, that doesn't change the fact that "Wannabe" wasn't released in the U.S. until 1997.

What exactly are you pointing me to? That's an entire Wikipedia page about the Spice Girls.

Did you hope no one would click on that link?

I live in the US now, but i remember in 1996 all the kids being all crazy about this new girl group called the Spice Girls… And this was in El Salvador… I know it was 1996 as it was the last year I lived there… the debate to when Wannabe was released in the US can't be used as a basis on whether is feasible for those girls to know about the group…. They were popular before the actual album release in America...

reply

Yes, that's El Salvador. Not the United States. Trust me, Americans do not follow other countries' pop charts. ESPECIALLY in 1996 when the internet was not as prevalent and ubiquitous as it is today. If you read the Spice Girls Wikipedia page, the Spice Girls took off all over Europe (and I guess Latin America) in 1996, but they didn't release in the U.S. until 1997.

Yeah, I guess... We follow a lot of Euro Dance Music. Even until this day, when I visit El Salvador; there are European DJ Concerts... Rap in the other hand, was never really that popular. So all the music they play in the show is not nostalgic to me... I didn't know about Tupac's murder until 1999-2000 thanks to VH1 Behind the Music...
