The word 'Dope'

It's used excessively in this how. However, I've only recently heard everyone saying it now, was this word also popular back in the 90's? This is the first show that's set in the 90's where I've heard it used in that sort of context.

reply

In that context I heard it used more in the 90s than I do now. Seems like it died along with 'wack,' 'phat' and 'bomb diggity'.

That is all.

Sorry Mr. Time Machine but that phrase was old in the 90s. LOL! It's really not a big deal though. It could be just where you're from. Who knows.... Or maybe it's on it's way back in?

reply

Okay, I'm really gonna date myself here, but here goes...When I was a little kid back in the early 1970s, TV ran this one commercial virtually non-stop. I still remember the refrain to the jingle: "Dope can't get it together; you gotta get it together yourse-e-elf." Obviously a somewhat different connotation of the term, but this post reminded me of that.

reply

Dope has been around since the 80's, maybe even earlier.

reply

And then in the most recent episode Eddie says "hella". Possibly the hip hop world was using that term that far back, but was it common enough to be uttered by a pre-teen in the suburbs?

reply

I caught that too. Given Eddie's unique musical taste, perhaps?

My question is was the word used in Florida. My only experience with it is growing up in California's Bay Area but I got ridiculed for using the word in Southern California. So that would be pretty cool to learn it once may have been used in other non-northwest United States regions.

reply

Hella has been around atleast since the late 90's.

reply

It was popular back then. With many things 20 years out, the kids of then are now the adults and now the stuff back then enjoys a resurgence.

Last year, I saw a young man with a "Bo Knows" hat. I began talking about it with him, about how he would have been like Jordan in pop culture if he hadn't broken his leg. The guy had no idea who Bo Jackson was! So, people are probably just using terms they had no idea happened back then. Fashion and fads are like that.

reply

"Dope" was a very popular slang term back then----lots of rappers used it in their songs. There's also a film that came out recently called DOPE, about a young high school nerd who's into '90s hip-hop, and even wears a perfect high-top fade.

How old are you? I'm around Eddie's age and I grew up in the city and the word "dope" was used very often. Different parts of the nation used different slang. Like here, there was "phat" and "buttas" to describe how something was good, since I'm more of a northeast and we take our influences from NYC.

Don't get hurt kid. I'm not your daddy, I'll beat you senseless.

reply

I'm 17. I live in a remote area so it sort of takes a while for us to catch up with the latest trends xD but even on social media it only felt like the word has only just started to become a thing. I don't know, maybe I am just slow at picking up on things

Pft! "I'm more of a northeast and we take our influences from NY." What a maroon. If anything, we take our influences from Boston, you buttcream licker. Jeez, didn't they teach you something in Resource Room besides how to help the janitor and color inside the lines?

I honestly don't know why they allow mindless freaks like you to post on IMDB. Seriously.
