Anyone warming to Jessica's penny-pinching demeanour?
as per subject. Discuss.
shareNo, it was cute at first...now it's just irritating
shareWell it's bow Chinese people are in general. They're penny pinchers. You have to understand that Chinese people had a lot of struggle throughout history, so it becomes natural to save. But some do gamble a lot because not having anything becomes greed also. Of all the Asians, Chinese are and other Asians who are first generation immigrants, are very cheap and those who became wealthy are very greedy.
I know this from personal experience.
I think it was the second episode, where she ran down the boys who did the dine and dash. When she got the boys to collect the onion for dinner, I cracked up.
I think any joke that is milked too much, loses it's edge though, and they are in danger of that
As someone who has Chinese parents I find it exaggerated for comic effect. I relate to it but not to the extreme of the way it's portrayed on the show. Then again my parents weren't strict or over bearing like most "Asian parents" are portrayed.
share... the portrayal in the show is fairly accurate from what my own experience. my family was working-class, lower middle class. my parents, for example, wouldn't have gone for an "economy plus" mostly for the financial reasons back in the day. there was no cable and only the fickle bunny ears antenna for the same reason.
i will say that it depended on the family though. my cousins, aunt and uncle had more money so they could afford cable, a larger home and more comfortable living arrangements.
My mother complains when I use too much dish washing detergent and toilet paper. Plus she reuses paper towels.
shareJust be Glad she doesn't reuse the toilet paper!
Actually, the paper towels caught my eye, because if I'm just mopping up some water, I'll let the towels dry, too.
I'm not cheap, I just don't like wasting stuff. Usually use a dish/hand towel, except for yicky stuff.
I don't buy paper napkins, either; I use cloth ones and save take-out napkins for bar.b.q or fried chicken etc.

Save the Planet, man . . .
. . . plus, I am kinda cheap. LOL
You Fill Me with Inertia.
Nah not really. My mom is a penny pincher and we were Hispanic! I think is funny.
What i find irritating is her rant on the movie The Wall, she ended up looking retarded...

I find myself seeing little things, like her packing lunches, and thinking Jessica would use lunch boxes instead of brown bags...too wasteful!
