The irony of this show: Terrible Marketing

The irony of the show is that it's all about branding and media and marketing.

And yet the marketing of the show was absolutely terrible.

They tried to sell people on a gimmick on the assumption of "No such thing as bad publicity" in the hopes that people would start talking about it. They gave the show a title that everyone hated, and portrayed the main character as extremely unlikable.

Not surprisingly, most people didn't tune in for the pilot. And by the time the show finally started getting buzz worthy and critics were starting to warm up to it (Episode 5), ABC decided to cancel it.

That's probably the best ad for Selfie. No hashtags or gimmicks. Just a standard comedy with heart. If the entire ad campaign was like that, the show probably would have done a lot better.

I like it, too. I have On Demand and they're spoon feeding us the last few episodes every couple of days. Today I watched the karaoke one; Eliza was heart-breaking when she sang that torch song. I watched that part three times. Here's an appreciative review from a fellow fan:

I agree, Traptc, ABC missed a gigantic opening to reach the ever so coveted young demographic by utilizing social media. Who is running that network? They have this show that is about social media and yet they don't use social media at all to market it? I don't get it. What a wasted opportunity. Shame on you, ABC.

Thanks, also, Isolde, for the great review! It was a fantastic episode!

Networks are still very old school in this level of marketing (and in the "world").

Remember when Conan was booted from NBC? One of the stipulations was that he could not appear on another network for a year... but nothing about him appearing on the internet.

reply

Well, I assume that the main goal was to prevent Conan from being in direct competition with Leno, rather than simply to spite Conan.

reply

Yes and no.

Conan did receive a buy-out for his contract. So while you are correct, it was to prevent direct competition it was also to keep him silenced on the issue.

reply

Its not that the networks are old school but the advertisers go by Nielsen ratings. That's where the networks make money.

I think had the shia been promoted better it might have stood a chance,

There was marketing for the show ?
I must have missed it.
I have not seen a deserving show so ignored by its studio since JOHN CARTER.

I think the title was the worst move.
I was turned off by the title and caught it by accident on abc.com and liked it.
Never saw a commercial for it though.
