As much as I love Karen Gillan...
(and that would be "love" as in 'having a hopeless crush on', lol).
...I don't like her character in Selfie. Sure, she develops as a person - and so does Henry, but her person in the show is nevertheless a person I'd never want to be around in real life. Too self-obsessed and superficial (and clueless too, for that matter). It makes it hard to watch the show and if it hadn't been for Karen Gillan I wouldn't have watched it to the end. I know it's a style - and a show - and not for real...but for every scene she's a promising future-Eliza there is a scene with a terrible present-Eliza.
Now that I've finished watching the first (and only) series I think I'll rewatch My Fair Lady soon - just to make a comparison. It's been a while since I saw it but as far as I can remember the character of Eliza Doolittle wasn't this bad.
Funny really, I feel the same about Audrey Hepburn as I do about Karen Gillan - too cute and completely perfect to even describe, but I know I do feel the same about Breakfast at Tiffany's as I do about Selfie > the main character is a terrible person. Breakfast at Tiffany's is a really popular movie, but the character Audrey Hepburn plays is a terrible person and for that reason I don't really enjoy watching (all of) it. I don't really know how George Peppard's character keeps going (although by doing so he IS a winner by the end).
I'd hoped for more from this show. I loved Suburgatory and I can see a lot of Emily Kapnek in both shows - she has a super quirky style which is great, but overall I think it worked better in Suburgatory. At least the "terrible character" (Dalia Royce) wasn't the main character of the show. But I'll definitely be keeping an eye on what Emily Kapnek produces in the future too. I hope she's able to refine her style into something that will survive more than 3 seasons (Suburgatory).
But who am I kidding - if there was more than one season of Selfie I'd watch it anyway. But there isn't. I'll still watch Selfie again...sometime - and the same goes for Suburgatory - I just love that Emily Kapnek's quirky sense of humor.
