Even if it was slightly too much like the Mindy Project ("slightly" being the operative word), it was a pretty damn good show, and it really pisses me off that ABC didn't even air the remaining episodes, instead replacing them with reruns of crap like Shark Tank.
I remember watching a couple of Mindy Project episodes but I never really got around to actually enjoying it as much as Selfie, the chemistry between Eliza and Henry really worked well and yet ABC canned it.
I'm very sad that not only was it cancelled, but the network pulled the last few episodes and didn't air them. That felt like a slap in the face from the network to the viewers.
But! Thank you, HULU for airing the episodes that didn't make it to air on network TV. I just watched episode 10, Imperfect Harmony, and I was so impressed with the end of it! The writers and actors literally moved me to tears, which was very unexpected for me. It kind of sucks though, because now I will miss this show even more, and will wonder what it could've been developed into as the show continued.
Ok, going to watch next episode now, and try to finish the series, with a heavy heart. Sigh...
ABC is the same company that filmed 14 episodes of the fantastic show "Daybreak" only to halt airing them after 7 episodes for "Everybody Loves Raymond" reruns, despite the fact that "Daybreak" was never designed to last beyond 14 episodes.
If I could control ABC, I would move Shark Tank, its more like a 7PM show or something on the weekends. Selfie should be a Friday show, Cristlea is my fav Friday show, but I can hardly watch Shark Tank or Last Man Standing. So they should have moved Shark Tank and put Selfie there.
Maybe the ratings just went too low. For some reason, edgy comedies like Selfie and Don't Trust The Bitch In Apartment 23 have a hard time staying afloat on ABC. I guess like Nintendo, ABC has built a wholesome, kid-friendly, family-oriented reputation. At least the edgier dramas like Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, the somehow-rated-TV-PG Revenge, Desperate Housewives, slightly-comedic Ugly Betty have survived for a good while. I almost never watch ABC in the middle of the day, so I don't know if it has any of those trashy daytime soap operas that seem to last forever. While a lot of people seem to think it's best to move provocative programming to cable television, I personally think the FCC should loosen the restrictions on network television. The S-word shouldn't be banned on network television (which seems to be the case in the midwest anyway) just because some conservative parents don't put their kids to bed at 9 ... and apparently don't know how to use the damn V-chip.
I could see this on Netflix. Just like the unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, this show should be picked up by Netflix. I think that's where you'll get true numbers.
I can't wait till certain networks die out, their producers know nothing.
Husband, daughter and I all loved this and all the characters! Was sad yet another good show was cancelled. Like my daughter said they cancel good shows and leave a lot of crap on TV!!
Your daughter is spot on. I guess to get the most viewers, they have to appeal to the lowest common denominator, instead of being different and clever, which Selfie was. Which is why networks and streaming services that don't really worry about ratings like network tv does, consistently have better quality shows. I just wish one of those services would have saved it. It had over 3 million viewers on ABC, which while low to average for network, would be huge for cable or streaming. At least your family has good taste!
