She stated that he was an alcoholic and didn't seem to put off that he was "brown bread", so I'm guessing she was justifiably bitter about more than a father who drank too much.

Yes, and it also tied in with what Brendan was saying about Raphina having "daddy issues" and girls like that needing protection. You can see the wheels turning in Conor's mind trying to figure it all out, hoping to become her protector. Great scene.
