I've always thought that much of the music of the 80s sucked the big one. Any bands that were in existence prior to about 1979 were pretty cool. But most of the MTV generation stuff sucked. But I still enjoyed the movie.

they are all recording artists from the 80's(MK was wit Dire Straits) who are still recording and playing live...your loss...In fact, one of the albums depicted in SS was an album by Joe Jackson. In addition, they referred to music by The Jam, led by Paul Weller, who went on to form Style Council and is still touring today. he is brilliant, as is Brian Ferry and Roxy Music. You don'y know what your missing!
I'm usually pretty quick on the uptake however it appears I totally missed your drift! Ironically, I have a that poster on the wall of my office which reads.."Sarcasm Society, like we need your support"
Re: my taste, 60s on up depending....mostly late 60s-70s. I can enjoy a wide variety (no rap, we used to do that in sessions, please)...rock mainly but anything in moderation deopending on the mood.
.....................Sometimes ya gotta wonder....
Well, taste is totally SUBJECTIVE. And I also grew up with music from the 60s and 70s ... but I have to tell you: my favorite bands are from the 80s: The Cure Smiths New Order Depeche Mode Clash Elvis Costello Pretenders ... and then later: Pearl Jam Strokes Jeff Buckley Built to Spill and so many more!!!
Music keeps always giving but you have to listen to it, otherwise you only listened when you were a kid.
Jeff Buckley? Built to Spill? Never heard of them. With the exception of Evils Costello and The Pretenders I can't name a single song by any of the acts you've named. Yet just today I heard my nieces, ages 12 to 30, listening to Led Zeplin, Van Morrison and Aerosmith. And they knew all the words.

Just because you (or I) have not heard something does not mean it is good or bad.
I LOVE bands like The Cure and The Smiths and even though I grew up as a kid with Beatles and Stones, The Cure and The Smiths have influenced my persona more than these sixties legends... Granted that Built to Spill is an Indies band... Jeff Buckley only had one album before he died (his dad was Tim Buckley who was a folk artist pre-Dylan and Joan Baez...
I lived in NYC in the 80s and all these bands were extremely influential... and no, I would not expect your nieces to have heard about them, but all of my 3 children (33, 26 and 24) were stuck in long road trips with me playing them, and they know them quite well.
My wife does not know the Grateful Dead too well ... does that mean the Grateful Band are not one of the greatest bands ever?
If you were my friend, I would force you to listen to many favorite tracks of all these bands ... they were the soundtrack of 1980 to 2000 ... But I do not know you and still respect that you have your own taste ...
I would never say that my music is better than someone else's... Do your nieces know Beethoven, Mozart or Bach? Have they heard a Day in a Life? ... Popularity does not equate to Quality.
PS: I forgot a ton of GREAT 80s bands, in additions to the ones I already listed... The Cure Smiths New Order Depeche Mode Clash Elvis Costello Pretenders Talking Heads U2 The Police Radiohead (perhaps 90s) Waterboys Bob Marley These were all influences to later Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Strokes, Arcade Fire, ... ... I still cannot get over how you may have missed all these !!!
