What a fantastic movie. John Carney is becoming a favorite of mine.

I loved Once. I really liked Begin Again.

And Sing Street was just a joy. I'd say it's somewhere in between Once and Begin Again in terms of tone and feel. Kind of a perfect middle ground.

The characters were so likable, the soundtrack was fun and catchy, and the relationships were so endearing, especially the two brothers.

This is a must watch. It's my new #1 of 2016 so far, of the 33 movies I've seen.

John Carney Movies
Once: 10/10
Begin Again: 8/10
Sing Street: 9/10

This is actually my favorite film since Whiplash in 2014.

I saw Once at the theater. I enjoyed the story but that pivotal song was played so frequently it became like fingernails on a blackboard by film's end.

That's what separated this film for me. Each song was fresh and unique. That coupled with marvelous acting, chemistry and flawless dialog(despite the fact that the Irish brogue was a tad difficult to discern from time to time. What was that quote about England and the USA...two countries separated by a common language.

And your top 10 list for 2016 only demonstrates what a weak year it has been so far. I would have found a spot for Eye in the Sky, if only because it was Alan Rickman's final screen role.

It's also my favorite movie of 2016 so far too.
Though, I disagree that 2016 has been a weak year so far, as it is still very early and I loved:
1. Sing Street.
2. 10 Cloverfield Lane (The ending surprisingly worked for me.
3. Hail Caesar
4. Zootopia
and then I liked:
5. A Bigger Splash
6. Eye in the Sky
7. Everybody Wants Some
8. The VVitch
9. Love and Friendship
10. Louder Than Bombs

I know I'm in the minority but I'm not a John Goodman fan(I know it's heresy) so this film did not interest me(I did see it).

Hail Caesar was decent and Zootopia was very sweet.

As much as I appreciate the director of Everybody Wants Some it just seemed to me like a story that had already been told...by better actors. I would consider going, than watch the preview, and be reminded of my feeling of deja vu.

I'm glad you enjoyed them!

A mixture of Once and Begin again is a perfect way of describing it. And the OP is right, John Carney is establishing himself as a very good director, so much so that i went to see this film on the strength of his name alone. I made the mistake of missing Begin Again at the cinema thinking i would HATE it (Kiera Knightley on her guitar? No thanks) but i loved it. Expectations, eh? I enjoyed Once. I might agree that this was the best new release i've seen this year. Some interesting lists here, so taking away Superhero films, my top 3 would be:

Sing Street
High Rise
Hush
I still can't make my mind up whether i loved Hail Caesar or not.

I liked The Witch but didn't care for it as much as others. She same goes for 10 Cloverfield Lane. I know this is a common complaint, but i would have really enjoyed it a lot more if it hadn't of had the word "Cloverfield" in the title. Half of the interest was knowing if John Goodman was a psycho and the other half was knowing if there really was something strange going on outside. But that's just my opinion.

Sing Street was certainly his best, at least out of the three. (I haven't seen his other films.) Sing Street has become my favorite movie.

It has everything Once and Begin Again have. It has the heart of them both. It has the realism that Once had, but it also has the sheer amount of positivity and hope that Begin Again had.

I don't feel enough for you to cry.

Oh well.
