The ending? (spoiler)

Seriously, could that boat ever make it across the Irish sea? Wasn't sure his big brother would let them set off in it, but hey, it's a damn fine romantic ending.

Haha. Of course not. They would die in real life, especially traveling in the wake of the boat like that.
And that's what I love so much about the ending. It's the perfect blend of reality and fantasy. It's happy sad. It's over the top and delirious in its romance.

Actually, if it wasn't for the ferry, then they would have likely capsized in the Irish Sea's waves that would have gotten much worse the farther out they went. But, if you have ever been on a large ship, the waves get knocked down and the sea in the large ship's wake actually stays calm for quite a distance behind the ship, until the new waves move in again. So if the small boat could do at least 15- 20 knots and stay behind the Ferry . Since Large Ferries from that time period couldn't go much over 20 knots, then they could have survived the 1 and 1/2 hour ride to Whales so long as they kept up with the ferry , IMHO.

As stated in the film, the trip across to England was about 30 miles. Cubans have been making the 90 trip to Florida in homemade boats for years. Of course they don't all succeed. But it possible and has been done. Still, it would take an extreme lack of brains or industrial sized balls to even try it.

Sonny: Is there a country you'd like to go to?
Sal: Wyoming.

This scene is the only reason I didn't rate this movie a 10. It's highly unrealistic that the boat would have made it. If I was to believe the fantasy then I needed to know they made it to Wales safely. I didn't need to see any other element of success, just a safe arrival. With that, my imagination would have filled in their future.

Funny, this scene was the final reason I gave it a 10. It's just so bittersweet and crazy, yet realistic, two young people chasing their dreams together, and maybe they made it, maybe they didn't. Who knows? It's so open-ended and entirely left to our imagination, yet we're given enough to decide in some way.

The song going with it reflects perfectly this idea, going forward and not looking bad, no matter the risks. I was legitimely scared for them at the end, and I would totally expect them to fail, and you could see their fear and hope on their face. However, if I expect them to fail (even just crossing the sea is incredibly dangerous, left alone survive and achieve their dreams in London), I really wish for them to succeed, which is why this film got me, because I wanted to believe against all odd, from beginning to end.
