What is your favourite of the original songs from this movie?
shareMine is hands down "Up", which I think perfectly captures the spirit of the entire movie, that is, a little melancholic yet unabashedly optimistic (i.e. happy sad).
Plus that whole sequence is the absolute pinnacle of the movie in my opinion, where the camera seamlessly pans 360° to another scene and each kid starts playing their part one by one, which then cuts to a moving shot of Conor on bike delivering the tape to Raphina. It just shows the dynamic of the characters being formed, and the sense of liberation you get as a teenager when you've found something new and connect with new people, and it couldn't have been more perfect and cinematic.
Very well said. You're the first person I've seen here that gives Up the proper recognition.
shareI love the song "Up" for the same reasons you stated, nardog, but you didn't even mention the moment in the montage that cemented this song as the most emotionally moving and powerful for me. It's the scene of Raphina in her bedroom, wiping away her makeup as she listens to the song, before sitting on her bed in tears. Seeing how the song impacted her resonated with me. The same can be stated of "To Find You", as both the performance of the song by Conor and the scenes of Raphina listening to it on tape, especially when she goes outside and sits on the bench with headphones on, were heartbreaking in the best way. Both of these songs captured the love story between two damaged people who lift each other up.
However, there is not a wasted song in this movie. All the original music fits the scenes and the story perfectly and it's why I love this film so much. The songs that have impact on the scene, however, are the best in my mind. Two of those songs, "Up" and "To Find You" were already mentioned, but the one Sing Street did not perform that still had a powerful impact (and a surprisingly moving vocal performance from Adam Levine) was the ending track, "Go Now." Basically, because it is strongly implied that these are the lyrics Brendan (Conor's brother) wrote for him. To watch the fantastical sequence of Conor and Raphina escaping Ireland in route to England with that song ended that movie on the perfect note. The thought that it was his older brother sharing these words with him, encouraging him to go, makes it even better.
What an incredible movie.
Definitely To Find You. One of the most moving, romantic, and heartbreaking songs ever written. And a raw, moving performance from Ferdia Walsh-Peelo in the movie.
There is another reason to fill your heart with hatred.
Absolutely, positively, "Drive It Like You Stole It."
But I hope at least one of the original songs gets an Oscar nomination.
I just finished watching this...it's definitely my favorite of the John Carney movies about music!
"Drive It Like You Stole It"
shareUp is the best but honestly every song is amazing and could very well be. Hell I even like the one about Complicated boys and girls :D I thought it was catchy AND awesome!! :D
shareThis is such a killer soundtrack, including previous standards(I'm a big Joe Jackson & Jam supporter) anyway, although my favorite keeps changing I would choose To Find You.
shareDrive it Like You Stole It. Hands down. I've honestly lost count of how many times I've listened to that song.
shareThe "Girls" song was really catchy.
