Was brother Baxter trying something with young Conor when he tells him to go to the restroom? I felt a sexual tension hence his reaction to Conor to remove his makeup in the following scene ...
Was I off or did anyone else feel the same? This is hands down my favorite movie of 2016!
Absolutely. I was horrified when he told him to use "his" bathroom. Thank god the movie spared us, it would have been a much bleaker movie...
This is yet another example of the movie's brilliance by the way, which is that it keeps insinuating darker things happening to its characters (Raphina's past, Barry's homophobia, the parents' marriage...) in a rather matter-of-fact fashion instead of shoving it into your face, which only enriches the narrative but never distracts you from having a full, linear experience that you will keep coming back to and thinking about afterwards.
and yes it was definitely leading that way, if you remember before he leaves the room (as you can see by his face he knows what might happen thats why he leaves), Baxter says something like 'you're perfectly pretty underneath the makeup'
We are never told what his true intentions were but the look on Conor's face and how he said 'I have to go to class' just gave off an extremely odd vibe.
It's brilliantly handled. All of the suggestion is there, from Baxter's actions to Conor's reaction, but it's never explicitly stated. It's pretty safe to assume, but handled in subtle enough fashion that it's not hammering you over the head with the idea.
