I like your explanation, is the boat wake easier to sail through?
I thought the wake way more dangerous, turbulent and choppy for a little boat to follow a big boat?
I was on a large ferry once from Nova scotia to Maine and I was on the back of it looking at the wake. The waves propagate outward from the sides of the bow up front, but behind the ferry, in the upwelling from the boats props, the ocean smooth's out for quite a distance, until gradually the waves In the ocean fill back in. But for a short distance, maybe a hundred yards or so, the water is quite calm immediately behind the moving ferry, Rewatch the ending again and you will see how the water is much smoother behind the ferry in the film. I believe the small boat could keep up with the Ferry to England if they could match the speeds which I think is very likely.Ferries in the 1980's were not that fast, only recently have their been ferries made that could go much faster and look like catamarans
