The Ending ..England Bound.Ferry Boat?

I was a bit troubled by the ending.

Wouldn't a real ferry stop and rescue that little boat with 2 people madly waving??? The ferry passengers might think the two youths in a ridiculously ill equiped craft in the middle of the straight could be waving for help?

Also its a bit unclear weather they could perish out there. I wish they cut away closer to land.

Still an incredible and entertaining movie!!!

I agree with you about the ending. I was thinking....'what are they going to drown now'? Why didn't they just take the ferry (about 40 pounds today). It just seemed a strange way to close out the movie and a change in tone. A nicer ending.... have them on the ferry watching tv and one of the band videos pops up on BBC.

Otherwise a very fun and enjoyable film!

Neither of them owned 40 pounds...

That would have been a bloody awful ending.

If you rethink the films ending , it was foggy when they came upon the Ferry and at an angle. The bridge of the ferry is so high up there would be no way for the crew to see that little boat, through the fog and at an angle so far below. Only the people eon the deck did because they were looking down . The ferry would not have ben able to stop for quite a distance anyway . Conor was able to match the speed of the Ferry to England because ferries that size can only travel around 20 kts and that little boat at full throttle could probably do 20 knots in clean seas, which the ferry provided in its wake for a few hundred yards off the stern. A very plausible ending in my opinion .

Great explanation, although I would have thought some passengers would race to the bridge and tell the captain to stop.

I like your explanation, is the boat wake easier to sail through?
I thought the wake way more dangerous, turbulent and choppy for a little boat to follow a big boat?

I was on a large ferry once from Nova scotia to Maine and I was on the back of it looking at the wake. The waves propagate outward from the sides of the bow up front, but behind the ferry, in the upwelling from the boats props, the ocean smooth's out for quite a distance, until gradually the waves In the ocean fill back in. But for a short distance, maybe a hundred yards or so, the water is quite calm immediately behind the moving ferry, Rewatch the ending again and you will see how the water is much smoother behind the ferry in the film. I believe the small boat could keep up with the Ferry to England if they could match the speeds which I think is very likely.Ferries in the 1980's were not that fast, only recently have their been ferries made that could go much faster and look like catamarans

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this GREAT explanation :)

I understood it as a nod to what Conor's brother was saying about being a jet stream for him. They find the ferry and continue the trip helped by its stream. It's easier to navigate in the stream of another boat because there aren't as many waves in that area.

Ahhh yes..the stormy troubled sea, followed by the smooth wake. Makes sense now how it ties together. Thanks!

I saw it as reality interrupting their fantasy. They had gone to England with nothing on the dream that they'll make it in London, and the cinematography changes from the style of the real life scenes to the style of the fantasy/music videos which to me seems to represent their delusion. The ferry suddenly showing up and ruining their final shot shows how ill prepared they truely are for the reality of the situation - they've gone out there purely on impulse.

Rather than being a happy ever after ending, I saw it was a reminder that this is really just the beginning of their relationship and the cruel reality is already starting to interrupt their fantasy lives. They're pretty much doomed in the way rebellious teenage fantasies usually are. Afterall, they only really get back together when Raphina gives in to suspension of disbelief - she knew perfectly well how ridiculous the whole situation was. They're just using each other to fulfill their own individual fantasies, and probably won't have a harmonious time in London.

haha...awesome post Histopaul!

What about this? The family was so poor they couldn't possibly have enough fuel in that little boat to make it. The boat capsizes due to the ferrie's backwash and they both drown. The song notes from "Up" float back to the surface.

Pretty sadistic don't ya think? As it is, we can imagine may endings as they get to London. They get a record deal and bail out their families when they get back, or they struggle along and possibly leaving open a movie sequel in the future. Or they stay in London and have success in music and their families join them there.

Why would you want a movie ending ruined by tragedy for after it was so nice for the first 105 minutes?

I was just joking, the other poster started it!
