Is this a racist show?
Seven astronauts. No black. No gay.
shareIt's based on real events. There weren't any African American or gay astronauts in the Mercury project.
shareBut you can modernize a true story. Five whites, one black and one gay seem more fair.
One of the astronauts, Wally, is not even an American but Englishman. I suppose there is no foreign astronaut in Mercury Project.
Are you seriously "special"!? LMBO
shareI think you are right. And they are all should be women too.
But why stop there? Don't you think it's unfair that they only take physically fit, highly educated people to be astronauts? The space program would only win if there would be a peaceful Muslim shepperd (he'd space the gay guy in the second episode and this way you could sympathise with them both), an African child-soldier, a lesbian or two, something trans-gender and a Democratic party commissar to lead the mission.
How about a self taught ex-con that studied astrophysics while in prison?

Troll.
shareSince when is Hollywood interested in historic facts?
Look up the term "racist" in the dictionary.
shareSeven astronauts. No black. No gay.

By your logic then we should have a movie about The Jackson 5 using all white people. I guess that makes about as much sense as your idea.
Maybe you need a history lesson before you watch something like this. This is a story about the 7 Mercury astronauts and their wives. None of the men or women were black or gay so how does that fact make this show racist?
When I was a kid there was a Jackson 5 animated series AND an Osmonds animated series. They were racially consistent with their historical counterparts. Michael didn't have vitiligo yet, so they drew him African American. Jan Brady, however, once wore a giant Afro wig, but I don't think she identified with the black community.
shareIf I recall reason Jan wore afro Wig because of her big sister Marica
Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.
TWO Latinas!
Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?
And no original trolling from the OP.

This show is a depiction of real people and real events as the occured in the 1960s. There were no black or gay astronauts so why would there be any in this series? Had this been fiction then the characters could be any race or have any sexual preference. Deal with it or don't watch.
shareMost movies based on a true story changed a little bit to reflect the value in the current time. If this series aims to inspire Americans, it can easily make one of seven astronauts black and probably another one gay. Five straight white astronaut is enough.
It is like a group of racists using history as the excuse to make an all white cast series or movie.
This show isn't interested in the current times, this is about history not the present day.
Most heroes wear capes, my heroes wear dog tags and kevlar.
These men were heros. So which one would you have them randomly change the narrative of their life? First American in space? First man to orbit earth? Whose accomplishments would you like to cast aside to create a version of ACTUAL EVENTS that you feel is more palatable?
shareReally, nobody says," I don't want any blacks or gays in my show, so I will only do historical shows about times and situations where there were no blacks or gays," They don't use history as excuse.
I don't think this series is attempting to inspire Americans. It is just a summer mini series about the actual original astronauts. You know that in our current times there is diversity in NASA.
It is impossible for those who produce historical shows to please everyone. If they are accurate and don't cast anyone black or gay, they are accused of racism. If they do make the characters and cast diverse, then they are slammed for being inaccurate.
If this were a show about a fictional group of astronauts, they could make them anything they wanted, but it isn't. There are no Native Americans in the cast and no women astronauts either.
I know there are many people who are racist out there. It is a terrible thing, especially given current events. But really, everyone is not racist.

By your logic a movie about Abe Lincoln would have a black gay actor portraying him. Now that would be truly realistic.
How do you know, for a fact, that none of the astronauts -- or their wives -- were gay? Do you really think they would have outed themselves?
