Yes, I know the word existed at the time, but in the show it's used same the way it's come to be used in the 21st Century, as a catch-all expression of something really outstanding rather than something that truly staggers belief.
shareWell, the Mets were "Amazing" in 1969, which is in the historical ballpark (so to speak). I don't know that winning the World Series staggers belief - after all, somebody does it every year - though they had been pretty crappy before that season.
