Zakima...yes...it has a lot of stiff competition being sandwiched between two other animated musicals. Trolls is shaping up to be red-hot both internatiinally and domestically. Sing is an Illumination film and they are currently the mist profitable animation studio on the planet.

Our girl has her work cut out for her.

reply

actually the most profitable animation studio is still the Walt Disney Studios and Pixar if you are combining them both being the same company since the merger.. however if you add up all 56 animated features not including their sequels , prequels, and midquels... Disney has earned more money since Snow White in 1937 up to 2016 with Moana and all its animated feature films to date they still hold the most money.. Disney isn't just a company any longer its a vast empire... Illumination, Sky, Fox, MGM, DreamWorks all added together couldn't compare to what Disney has accomplished... perhaps I am a bit biases in my counts here but looking at almost 100 years of a company producing animated films compared to new companies ... Frozen and Finding Dory are the 2 top animated films of all time along with Lion King... and they all came from Disney/Disney Pixar studios..

Well everyone less than an hour until show time.. I will let you all know how it goes..

zakima...with all due respect...currently Illumination is the most profitable studio. Their films have made ether close to a billion each since Despicable Me 2 and they are produced at nearly 1/3 the cost of either WDAS or Pixar films. That's what profit is all about.

Regardless...I am totally excited to her your report!

gotcha QueenFanUSA.... anyway onto the the review of the film...

So tonight I was afforded the opportunity to watch Moana in 3D...

This is my non-spoiler review: The film itself is wonderful and it reminds me of an episode of my little pony from back in the 80's with crunch the rock dog which was one of my favorite episodes...

So the story starts off as just that grandma Tala telling the story of Maui and the heart of Te-Fiti....

The animation is at its best especially in 3D... some of the best scenes in 3D are The Kaka Mora, The night scene with grandma tala's spirit talking to Moana, the ending with TeKa and the parting of the sea was beautiful.. there some others... also Tamatoa was interesting and the realm of monsters is great ..

Now not only is the animation wonderful but the story is great also... the relationship between Maui and Moana is that of Ralph and Vanelopee to start..

But before that we get a beautiful development of Moana and her parents relationship, there are moments when you forget that this is a cartoon and feel for Moana and her people.. ( sorry its been a while since I wrote a review for any film.

Outside of the animation being flawless and the story woven to perfection I would love to say that this is on the scale of Frozen but I think its on a level all its own. Meaning its hard to compare this film with others... its easy to say its lilo and stitch meets Pocahontas but its really not... its a beautiful film that stands on its own... I would like to have the mindset that Moana has the bravery and courage of Mulan, the temper of Merida, the beauty of a young Nani from Lilo and Stitch, and the determination to complete her journey that Mulan had...

The music in the film is amazing. I have to say that LMM , Te Vaka and all the other artist and composers who worked on the music knew what they were doing...

My favorite songs are:

How Far I'll Go
You're Welcome
We Know the Way
Logo Te Pate

the song shiny was interesting to say the least... the crab/lobster is momentary but memorable.

The film is awesome and tomorrow night I will be screening Trolls. I am looking forward to comparing the two films in the aspect of what a child thinks of it.

My 5 year old went with me tonight and fell in love with Moana.

Not sure what else to write here in a non-spoiler review.. but if I have to rate it out of 5 stars it gets just that...and 2 thumbs up.

How would you say it compares to Zootopia? I often say that a movie would have to completely rewrite the rulebook on animation to be better than that movie. But which would you say is better, or are they kinda even?

reply

Moana and ZooTopia are two different films, one is an adventure princess film / heroine film... and ZooTopia is a mystery chick flick well bunny flick lol ... the topics of the two are very different because the topic of ZooTopia is prejudice and acceptance where Moana is more about knowing your place and wanting more... which I guess could be compared to Judy... but if I had to compare films which as I have said in many post I love all Disney films but Moana to me is something that has more heart to it... I would like to say Moana is a beautiful mixture of Rapunzel, Anna, Mulan and Merida.... she doesn't stop going even when she should.. she is determined and she has her family ...... both parents live through out the film however grandma tala dies a little ways into the film.

I like this film more than ZooTopia but less than Beauty and the Beast which is still my #1 film... Frozen for half a second took that spot because of the song do you wanna build a snowman...

outside of the amazing animation the music is some of the best I have ever heard... the Polynesian culture is captured so beautifully here in this film.

@zakima

Fantastic! I am sooooo heartened by your review.

Did you like it more than Frozen or Tangled?

Thanks so much for your review!! It's making me even more excited for the movie 

I knew the music was going to be amazeballs because, duh, Lin-Manuel Miranda (I honestly don't think that man could write a song I don't like if he TRIED), but the movie as a whole just looks stunning, and it sounds like it's going to be another really wonderful Disney classic!

I've already listened to Logo Te Pate and the radio version of How Far I'll Go a ridiculous amount and adore them both ^__^ I can't WAIT for the movie version of How Far I'll Go- I'm never a fan of the overproduction for the radio versions, but the melody and lyrics or so beautiful!

After your highly accurate review on 'Finding Dory', I'm inclined to believe you on this one. 

Speaking of which, how does this compare with 'Finding Dory'? I would also like to know what you think about animation styles of both films respectively.
