First Reviews Are In!

The first group of reviews are in for Moana...and they're pretty positive! It's currently sitting at a score of 78/100 on Metacritic (with 8 reviews)

Reading the reviews, this seems to have a similar reception that Frozen had.

I'm mitigating my excitement a bit now, the plot sounds very reminiscent of Mulan all of a sudden.

reply

Didn't expect them to come that early. But they are fantastic! Another hit for Disney!

Great to hear. I'm interested to see how it does at the box office. It definitely has more hype than Frozen did, so I can see it being more front loaded, but I doubt any animated movie will ever have the legs that Frozen did, so I don't think it'll reach Frozen's final BO numbers.

reply

Frozen wasn't having to compete against two other animated musicals either like Moana. It will be nearly impossible for it to have Frozen's legs.

reply

While I agree it will be nearly impossible for it to have Frozen's legs (I don't think any animated movie ever will match Frozen's legs), I don't think the competition will do much to it. It looks to be, by far, the best of the three animated musicals (seriously, Sing looks completely pointless), and I just can't imagine many people deciding to wait for this on DVD in favor of Sing. And Trolls will have worn off mostly by the time Moana comes out.

reply

I'm not worries about Trolls anymore. 45m is good but not good enough to be a threat to Moana. Sing on the other hand can steal the family audience away from Moana

reply

You'd think so, but Trolls is beating freaking Hacksaw Ridge... which, frankly, speaks volumes about how far we've fallen as a species.

reply

Or how far Mel Gibson fell within our species.
He is still struggling to get back from some bad press, and that affects his box office whether he is in the movie or not.

Good point! I'd forgotten about the controversy surrounding him.

It's definitely not as good as "Frozen" (the music isn't as powerful), but I still really enjoyed it! It will do well...

"Definitely not", huh? Is it just because of the music? How would you rank it against Tangled? That's dinged by many as having mediocre music in comparison to Frozen as well.
