Oscar for Beat Song
Alessia Cara's sing better at least be nominated.
shareHaving just finished listening to the album, I'm not 100% sold that How Far I'll Go is the best option for Disney to go with Original Song. Mainly because the song isn't entirely memorable and I feel the song is a little too specific to the story to truly cross over and connect (which is needed for the Oscar)
I think You're Welcome is a stronger song and a bigger earworm. I wouldn't be surprised if You're Welcome becomes the Let It Go song for this movie. Not saying it will be as huge as Let It Go (in fact I don't think any of Moana's song have the ability to become a cultural impact sadly). Perhaps the visuals will change my opinion, but if Disney and Lin-Manuel are hoping for a little gold man, I think they would be best to put money into You're Welcome.
I somewhat agree that I actually might prefer for them to go with a song other than How Far I'll Go for Best Song. Not because I don't think it's a gorgeous song (it is, and it's better than Let it Go, really, mainly because Lin's a master lyricist), but because it feels a tad more rushed/short to me than the other songs. There's something in that transition from the first chorus to the next verse in particular that feels a little awkward to me... like there could be a really pretty orchestral moment there to let the song breath but instead it hurries into the verse. It's still a song I can listen to over and over, and I do find it very catchy, but I just feel like there are enough other songs in the score that feel perfect to me, and are also different enough from Let it Go that they wouldn't be getting those comparisons like How Far I'll Go would haha.
Personally I'd be totally down for We Know the Way or You're Welcome winning Best Song, or even Where You Are :) I feel like I haven't seen as much comment on Where You Are, but I love it! It's very Under the Sea-esque to me, and I love that Shiny is fantastic too, but... do villain songs tend to get nominated? I'm not sure what the precedent for that is.. haha
But, realistically, We Know the Way would be an awesome one for the them to put into the running- it's stunning, and that way it would include Opetaia Foa'i in the win as well!
Oh Bambi, I cried so hard when those hunters shot your mommy. - Kurt Hummel
I can see what you mean by transitioning between first chorus to the second verse, but I also think the beauty of the song (well, I like the whole song, so I'll say the key beauty that makes me listen over and over) is the third chorus. The change in lyrics between first and second chorus is nice, and then the power of the third chorus makes me fall in love with the song. I haven't heard the others, though, so I might like another one even more. I'll find out in less than 24 hours!!!
shareIt's gonna be tough competition going up against La La Land. Still i'm glad there will be a competition in Best Original Song this year as its been pretty poor of late.
shareI just listened to the whole soundtrack and I'm surprised everyone loves "Your Welcome." I really like most of the songs, but find "Your Welcome" kind of annoying.
