Saw it last night. My thoughts.

It's a 9/10. It's really quite good. Great story, voice actors, and EXCELLENT VISUALS!! The only reason it didn't get to the level of Tangled or Frozens' 10/10, for me, is, frankly, the music!!

Part of the charm of these movies is the excellent musical numbers they do, and in Moana, they're all duds!! (How Far I'll Go is the best by far). Ughh. I know it's Lin doing it too but !!! The music just wasn't doing it for me at all.

The story itself and the action and stuff was great though.

I give it a 10/10 because of everything you said except the music. I loved the music myself. To each their own, though. The visuals astounded me particularly. I hadn't heard anything about the visuals bring particularly amazing, so I wasn't really expecting to be blown away with them like I was. Top notch animation.

Hmmm you've just watched a movie which is a Musical, and rated it a 9/10, then you've gone onto describe the songs and music as duds. This makes no sense to me?. The core of any movie/musical are its songs and music, it helps enhance/develop the story. To get a 9/10 rating everything should have been top notch, with only minor negatives which are usually personal peeves. Yet you still rated Moana highly, if you hate the music and songs of a "Musical", wouldn't it be a complete fail. Seems like you have just decided to dislike the songs etc without accepting how important they were to telling the story. Thats just my opinion of course, but your rating really doesn't make sense to me.

There's like what-- 5 songs? And the songs are literally songs they aren't essential core to the movie.

I agree with you. Of course the music there is going to tell you what's going on but it definitely could've been done better.
There weren't even that many songs--5 maybe? Excluding the reprises of How Far Will I Go. They could've maybe spent more time with them? Idk.

I was hoping for more Polynesian sounding songs. Lilo & Stitch has a better discography than Moana imo and for a musical that really says something.

And don't get me started on that Shiny song, I couldn't understand half of what the singer was saying.
