Despite the beautiful visuals

This movie was extremely tedious. And I've never been so annoyed at a Disney sidekick than the one joke mentally challenged chicken. I loved Lin-Manuel's music and the water and Hawaiian visuals were gorgeous, but honestly the movie is like a 6/10 for me. Critics eating this up proves that Disney can continue to do no wrong, but let's be honest... Zootopia was much better than this.

I personally liked it better than Zootopia, which I also loved. I very much enjoyed the story and characters, and thought the chicken was hilarious. But to each their own.

What did you like about this film better than 'Zootopia'?

reply

Obviously the fact that it's a musical with great music helps. But I actually enjoyed the story a little bit more. And I loved Maui. And I found it a little funnier. Again, this is absolutely no diss on Zootopia, as I absolutely loved that movie, too. I just liked this one better.

reply

I guess some people like the musical and adventure aspects of this film while others like the social commentary aspects of 'Zootopia'.

Do you think I should open an 'Inside Out'/'Zootopia'/'Finding Dory'/'Moana' discussion thread here? All of these are critically acclaimed animated films from Pixar or Disney.

reply

I wouldn't mind if you did. This board is a little quieter than I had hoped. All four of those are great films, so it would be interesting to see where everyone ranks them.

reply

Would you say that 'Moana' was better executed while 'Zootopia' was more "ballsy" regarding things like social commentaries?

reply

Hmm. I would say they were equally well executed, and then it's just a which do you prefer thing. I personally preferred Moana. I can see why other people would prefer Zootopia. Both were about as well executed as I can imagine. Zootopia definitely went with a riskier subject contect, while Moana's lesson was great, but much safer.

reply

See I was let down by this and Finding Dory. Again they felt tedious to me. I loved Zootopia and Jungle Book. I guess to each their own

I absolutely loved Zootopia as well as Inside Out. Finding Dory was just alright, wouldn't really watch it again. I haven't seen Moana yet but I have heard the album and love a few of the songs (You're Welcome, We Know The Way, Shiny)...I'm not expecting to like the movie better than Zootopia but I hope its better than Finding Dory.

reply

Zootopia was 10x better and I didn't even see it in theaters.

reply

Same lol I was bored and skimming Netflix when I saw Zootopia there. I played it but only for background noise as I did homework. Then I got hooked and ended up loving it ?

reply

I agree that Zootopia was better, but I still thought Moana was pretty cool. 

reply

I thought Zootopia was good, but I didn't love it like everyone did. My biggest issues with Zootopia was that the mystery was incredibly predictable and its whole message became really forced at points. Personally I thought the story and characters were done better with Moana.

reply

Oh god this so much !!!!!

This was my exact problem with Moana. It was lovely but I felt like I had seen it so many times before. Not that that's a bad thing but when you see movies such as kubo and Zootopia, Moana just pales in comparison, at least for me. I really want to see the red turtle also. This year has been amazing for animation.

Thank you. I just feel exhausted by the formula.
