This was good, but didn't grab me throughout...

I felt the movie took a while to get started. The movie's really only kicks into high gear when Maui is reintroduced. After that it's pretty entertaining but the crab sequence seemed to go on a bit too long. The resolution was also a little anti-climactic. But the animation is breathtaking and the music is catchy and it is fun. Just not as great as I hoped it would be.

I'm hearing a lot of mixed thoughts about this film... so it's no surprise I hear this...

I agree about the crab, only because he was mostly inconsequential to the film.

And that's something that Disney's usually pretty good at avoiding; characters that exists just for the sake of existing, as though they're there for no reason other than to sell more toys. The Crab, the coconut Pirates, and the Pig were all just that.

Same. The crab sequence kind of went on too long for me and I didn't like the coconut pirates. Those sequences were more for the kid's sake instead of storytelling.

The crab sequence was stunning on all cronts, imo.

I thought the coconut pirates was one of the best sequences in the film. I was also disappointed with the underuse of the pig. They promoted him more than the chicken yet the chicken got the most screen time.

It was the best Disney animated film since Winnie The Pooh 2011 in my opinion. It was like a Cross between Hercules and Pochontas.

I definitely don't think its as good as Zootopia, which I found to be incredible.

reply

I actually haven't seen that yet so I can't comment on that and I won't argue it.

reply

You really should see it; ZT is great. Different from Moana but fanatic.

Totally agree- didn't "grab" me so much, either. Was it a good movie? Yes... and definitely worth the extra to see in 3D, but this one just didn't give me the "feels" that many other Disney have done. The music/songs were good, not great. Overall, though, I WAS entertained and considered it worth the $$.

BTW- I don't think I would have liked this one if not for the big screen... home TV's won't do this one justice. Try to see it in a theater.
