I think she's the first Disney "princess"

To actually be shown making decisions that would affect her country (well village in this case) in the context of her role as next leader in line.

So good job Disney on finally showing some duties a "princess" might actually have.

Very good call.

We won't count 'close the gates, the party's over'.

Or, 'We are never closing the gates again'.

Moana is really actually trying to lead her people.

Pocahontas got political and influenced her father's decisions towards the end. And Mulan saved her country from the Huns.

I guess the lesson here is that Disney's ethnic princesses have to work while the white ones get to just sort of sit around and be pretty.

Ha, kidding. They're actually more three dimensional which is a good thing.

Well, Mulan saved China, Pocahontas was political active and Merida (yes, she is Pixar) nearliy caused a war but also brought peace back.

Neither Pocahontas or Mulan did what they did within the context of being a successor or ruler. Particularly Mulan as she is not the daughter of a ruler (whether chief, king emporor, etc.). And Merida is Puxar, not to mention I would argue that her sctiins toward peace was still more for herself than her country.

The story for Moana is actually grounded around her being the next in line. We see her performing actual administrative duties that affect her country/village. Moana is really the Polynesian versiin of what Brave sgould have been.
