Potty Humor

There is alot of potty humor in so called "family" films these days, including Moana. Maui getting hit by a dart "on my but check as he said it, the implication that Moana peed in the water and Maui felt it. And during the previews there were several as well. Sing with the rabbits singing "Oh My God, Look at that Butt." Smurfs with the line "that's what I call talking out of your butt"!

I get that its hard to make a movie suitable for kids that contains nothing that isn't offensive or objectionable to somebody, but why do so many resort to potty humor? Disney and Pixar have been less guilty than other studios, but they still feel the need to have one or two in every movie these days. I don't have kids, but I have friends and relatives who do, and they don't want their kids to repeat many of those lines. I love a good animated musical, or comedy, be it from Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks or any other studio, but I've gotten tired of all the unfunny, potty humor that are scattered throughout family films. Not only do many parents not want their kids to see or hear it, they are just a lazy way to get a few extra laughs in movies instead of coming up with something more original. If there was such a thing as funny potty humor, Shrek already did it all. No need to try to make any more.

First, it's actually Maui that peed in the water when Moana was feeling it. Just pointing that out.

Second of all, this isn't really potty humor. Someone peeing in the water? Yeah, like no kid has ever done that before. This is teaching them to do it! HOW HORRIBLE! And getting a blow dart to the butt cheek also isn't inappropriate. Or at least, I don't see how it is. And I was an extremely sheltered child. So, yeah. I don't really get your point.

Seriously? I'm in my 40's and clearly remember around 1989 or so when the Simpsons were huge. Parents saying the exact same thing. Heck even way before that! Did you ever watch Tom and Jerry? How about Looney Toons? Remember how violent is was? I clearly remember a Looney Toons episode from when I was a kid where Daffy Duck after writing a screenplay or something visits a studio and attempts to present it to a producer while acting out the parts if I remember correctly. At the end he pulls out a gun and shoots himself in the head. This part has now been edited but it stayed that way for many years!

Point here is these things are harmless slapstick comedy. And mostly geared towards adults enjoyment. If still think classic animations weren't also offensive in some way I invite you to watch Petter Pan again! Here's a hint: as someone who's Native American I should be very offended by it! But I just see it as a sign of the times.

I don't think this is some major problem and certainly not new in family entertainment. The important thing about comedy will always be the timing and fitting the context of the film. Since Moana is largely a comedy oriented adventure in the vein of Tangled, everything it does fits well. Sure, there are a lot of films out there that don't do this well and those films are usually called out on it.

I did not have a big problem with Moana, my main problem were the previews before it. Disney and Pixar have far less potty humor than most animated movies. I understand parents have different standards for what is appropriate and what is not for their children. My problem is that many movies contain nearly the same jokes that are unnecessary, and in my opinion inappropriate for children. That's not to say that movies need to be made to please everybody, that's impossible. What I am saying is I know parents who won't take their kids watch many of these movies just because they have several of these jokes. That's different than unrealistic violence or scary moments. A child can't copy those things, and can forget about them. It is ultimately up to parents to decide what their kids should watch. All I'm saying is that I know parents who won't let their kids see some of these movies because they have potty humor throughout. I understand many people are fine with it. That doesn't change the face that many parents are not, and they're kids are dissapointed because they can't see a movie that was highly marketed towards them. Diseny for the most part isn't the problem. Their competitors are the much bigger issue.

I didn't think the peeing joke in Moana was that bad. It was pretty subtle and I think there's a possibility it would fly over a very little kid's head. But I agree with you on The Smurfs and Sing thing. I know little kids wouldn't really get it, but we don't need five-year-olds singing "look at her butt".
