Moana's Opening Day Bests Frozen - 15.7 Million to 15.2 Million

Per Variety.

Frozen ended up making 93.4 million against bigger competition in Catching Fire. Moana also has better reviews.

It's a satire account, mocking QueenFanUSA, who is a massive Disney fan but finds a way to complain about how well every Disney movie does at the box office.

That is incredible. Moana is doing great! Can it make it 100 million in the 5-day? That would be incredible. An attainable goal at this point with it currently outpacing Frozen!

I don't think it makes sense to make a comparison to Frozen. Frozen was Disney's return to the top (of course Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph laid the foundation), but it was really a surprise that it did as well as it did. The opening weekend was just okay, and it got better with the word of mouth. I remember its returning to Top 1 at the box office multiple times, and it stayed in the top 10 for a long, long time. It had a really weird sales curve.

Moana looks good (I'm only judging by the ads because I haven't seen it, but I will!), but Frozen was really an outlier. I really hope Moana does well to give Disney more reasons to diversify their animation projects to feature other cultures and musical styles.

Every Disney animation film will be compared with each other, especially those released during the same time periods (i.e. Frozen and Moana).

Nothing extraordinary when you consider inflation adjustments.

Adjusted for inflation only matters for record setting. Moana isn't expected to break tons of records, it's expected to make money. That's all that really matters in the end. And this number shows that it's well on its way.

I think they're still tracking this $80 million for 5 days. That's a bit on the low end.
