LOVED IT

I'm a huge Disney fan and I was so excited to finally get to see this.
WORTH THE WAIT.
I absolutely loved it. It was full of adventure and honestly had me on the edge of my seat a couple of times. I loved the dialogue between Moana and Maui. Moana was an awesome character, as well. She showed fear but also a lot of strength, which I think is a great message.
The grandma was also one of the coolest characters. So spunky!
I think Disney did a great job. It had to have been hard following up Frozen, but I think they picked the right film for sure.
I also really loved the song "How Far I'll Go."

I agree with everything you said.

Best movie of the year IMO...and I'm not a huge fan of animated movies. Nearly perfect movie.

Yes this was truly a wonderful film and I agree with all your accounts as well. Definitely the best mainstream animated film this year.

"If life is getting you down and needs uplifting, then please come dance with me!"

What surprised me the most is that it dug pretty deep into the Hawaiian religion. Sure, we knew the demigod would be battling other mythological beings. But it went way beyond just action stuff. There was a lot of sincerity when it came to reincarnation, the water spirit, and of course the conclusion.

Compare this to something like Gods of Egypt and it's night and day. Gods of Egypt resembled the Egyptian religion in many ways. Yet it felt like window dressing rather than something properly respected.

I didn't like everything in this movie. Disney is smart though. They try to give people enough substance to make up for whatever doesn't appeal to them. Like in Frozen it was the sweet relationship of Anna and Elsa. In Moana, for me, it was how gracefully they handled the beliefs and culture.

I agree. And I honestly didn't know much about the Hawaiian culture/religion, but I loved how much they incorporated it. I found it all really interesting.

Not well versed in it either but it felt pretty faithful. I love learning about different cultures and religions because it's like a peak into their world. Reading is more technically informative yet a movie like this really brings it to life.
