A better ending? *spoilers*

Anyone else think Maui should have lost his fishhook permanently and ended the movie with him living among the rest of the humans again? Would have conveyed a sense of loss and gradual acceptance. A far more mature ending that would also have left a strong message for kids as well.

Eh, that's one of the few slacks I will always grant to Disney. Disney is like sugar, everyone should indulge sometimes, just keep it in moderation. There are so many other sources for dark, bittersweet, or what ever kind of ending you want that there's no need for Disney to jump in on that.

Maui is based on an actual Polynesian mythological character. Many of the things he said he did in the movie (like lift up islands with his fishhook and hold up the sky) is written in their cultural history. Disney did a lot research in ensure they stayed true to his myth.

Having him live with humans without his fishhook would most likely piss off Pacific Islanders and the elders the filmmakers consulted and fortify the criticism Disney gets for appropriating ethnic cultures.

I think they left it open for a sequel.

He already proved himself by sacrificing his hook to save Moana. He deserved a reward for his selflessness.
