The film opens with Moana's grandma discussing old legends - mainly having to do with Maui the Demigod taking the heart of Te Fiti. She explains that the islands, as a result of his doing, I interpreted, are now cursed, and dying off one by one because Te Fiti is vengeful. This scares the children she is teaching, but a toddler Moana delights in the tale. :)
As her father, the Chief tries to console and reason with the kids; Moana slips out and to the shore, enchanted by the beauty of the ocean at once. The ocean then "chooses" her as The One, (though this is officially revealed later) by showing her the green heart stone of Te Fiti...the one out of her grandma's story.
It's really just setting up the rest of the movie; but I thought the ocean imagery about four scenes in, and aquatic animation, was GORGEOUS. Really well done.
