'Moana' is a feminism done right.
Paul Feig, take note.
shareNo. Moana isn't feminism at all.
Paul Feig did Feminism right, because that's what feminism is: Stupidity and Man Hating.
No, it isn't. Feminism is not about women being better than men, but in having equal rights, nothing more. It's about fairness for everyone - men, women, and others alike.
shareWhat if she had a love interest ? That'd be the same thing ? --'
shareThe same thing as what?
shareAs being a good feminist character. Belle, Pocahontas, Esmeralda ,Kida,Meg, Mulan, Anna.. To name a few were good. Nothing new here.
shareI'm still a little confused. Having a love interest is the same thing as being a good feminist character? Is that what you're saying? Isn't having a love interest a separate description from being a feminist? They could exist at the same time or not, such as having a love interest and being whatever a non-feminist is or having a love interest and being a human. Trying to make sense of this. Is there something I'm missing?
shareI have problems with how incompetent Maui was for most of the movie. I don't think Disney would make a female character the way they wrote him.
However, for the good, I REALLY enjoy the fact that Moana was being set up to be a leader and there was no mention at all that she was a girl. She isn't a ruler "despite the fact that she is a girl." Everyone just accepts it. I would love to see more strong females written like this.

Actually, you could also argue that Moana was pretty much helpless early in the film. You could tell that she was pretty bad at sailing. In other words, both sides had to learn from each other.
shareYea, it's not like she was perfect. She made mistakes, and later on she even becomes convinced her entire mission was a mistake.
shareOur entertainment was just mirroring real life. With women being in helpless situations. I don't know where you're getting incompetent from though.
Also women don't dream of rescuing men, so it can't exactly be reversed.

Oh, but you can't say this because it doesn't fit the narrative of the men-babies, where women are all evil femi-nazi's out to take manhood away!!!!!!!!!!!
shareBut women are helpless and incompetent in real life. Portraying them so is only doing justice

When was the last time you saw a helpless and incompetent woman in any movie, let alone a disney movie?
shareElsa says hi. They play the exact same role to the heroin.
shareCan we please stop with the feminism topics already, I'm tired of seeing them on every board. It would be very detrimental to my film watching if I constantly worried if a film is "feminist propaganda" or was bothered because "a woman wasn't respectfully represented". Both sides need to just leave movies alone, there's a lot of them out there so just enjoy what you want to enjoy.

I am interested in hearing your thoughts on why Ariel is the best Disney princess.
