I'm really excited to see this film, but I have one question...

I showed the trailer to my sister. She's excited for the film, too, but she brought up something interesting...

If the sea is Moana's friend, why can't it sail the boat for her?

Maybe she wants her to get the job done herself, haha.

It can, but it doesn't. There would be no movie if she just sat on the canoe and was steered away from everything that's challenging.

The ocean wants to teach her to wayfind so her people can learn again and return to the sea and explore the ocean. IT doesn't want to be a babysitter.

The scene during the storm, Moana asked for the Ocean's help.

She did get it, but not before being half drowned.

It's a pretty blatant "be careful what you wish for" trope.
