A Mad Max reference?

Seriously, Disney? Because, yeah, Mad Max: Fury Road was such a children's film. What's next? A reference to Goodfellas in your next feature?

You know the cool thing about references?

People only get that they exist if they have already seen the thing they're referencing.

reply

Exactly - they work on two levels.
For those who know, they get the wink and a chuckle.
For those who don't, they get a completely organic scene build up.

I was also reminded of Waterworld then; but I haven't seen that one in 20 years, and maybe it was only because they're in the ocean.

reply

Yup, definitely Waterworld as well, but to be fair Waterworld is Mad Max on water.

reply

I thought Waterworld since that came out in my time back in the 90s and they were on the Ocean. But Mad Max makes more sense because Watereorld sucks.

reply

I was so bored during Mad Max I stopped paying attention. What was the reference in Moana?

reply

The coconut creatures on their boats with the banging drums.

reply

I really don't think you should've dignified that with a response. Anyone who was bored in Mad Max... I have no words.

reply

And there was an Abyss reference. Or ripoff

reply

To each their own I suppose. I found Mad Max to be so very unbelievable and therefore ridiculous and stupid. But I respect your opinion.

reply

I'd say thats fair criticism but I take issue with the term boring, though I guess I can see if those things led it to be uncompelling to you then I could see it boring you. Point well made. Kudos for being respectful.

A reference to Goodfellas in your next feature?

Well, there was a Godfather reference in Zootopia.

reply

The Godfather has become like Citizen Kane: even if you haven't seen it, no matter what age, you're gonna know what the reference is.

reply

Yeah, they already did the Goodfella's reference though in Zootopia. I doubt your average 10 year old is going to get that but it's a funny impression all the same.

reply

They did Godfather, not Goodfellas.

reply

Oh please, it's not the first time they referenced an adult film.

For example; Zootopia made references to Breaking Bad and the Godfather.

Toy Story made references to The Shining, Total Recall, Alien, and The Exorcist.

Finding Nemo did some for Psycho, and The Birds.

And that's nothing compared to the Sexual Innuendos that they put in their movies as well that people are still bitching about even though the kids won't get it until their teenagers.

I already mentioned Godfather. It's a film so influential, that even with the rating, it's gonna be referenced anywhere. That doesn't count. Breaking Bad isn't an adult film, it's a TV show rated TV-14.

The other films you mentioned were from Pixar before Disney completely put the brand in their company, so they don't count. And no, Psycho and The Birds aren't adult films. Maybe too scary for the very little but doesn't have much inappropriate scenes in them (well, Psycho but that's done subtly.

There are ways to handle innuendo, like what Groucho Marx would do, and there are ways to not do them (ex: "See these gloves? They weren't white when I bought them").

TV-MA.

AMC listed the entire show, barring the first two episodes, as TV-14.

This year's version of The Jungle Book contains an Apocalypse Now reference.

Monsters University has references to An Officer and a Gentleman, Monty Python's Meaning of Life and Gladiator.

Brave references The Wicker Man.

Wreck-It-Ralph references Alien, Predator and Terminator 2.

And so on, and so forth...

Man, do you live under a rock or what?
Disney and Pixar, have been referencing classic movies forever.
A movie reference is nothing new, and Disney has had a hodgepodge of references in their movies for a long time, including these so called "mature" films.

Zootopia referenced The Godfather. Finding Dory referenced Aliens. The original Finding Nemo referenced Psycho. The Good Dinosaur referenced The Big Lebowski. Woaaaaahhhhh, first-person shooters were a thing in Wreck-It Ralph. Just go ahead and look at 2001: A Space Odyssey in WALL-E, and Titanic even! Let's hope those kiddos don't pop in Titanic to watch that nude scene!

I really don't appreciate your tone.

I could not care less.
