Arrival and Moana are like in the exact same boat for me

Critics overhyped them both but in the end they were both just fine movies but nothing really to write home about. Moana was especially formulaic and predictable but had a great soundtrack and animation. Beyond that I was surprised it had got such rave reviews.

Funny you mention that as yesterday I saw both of them in the same order and came out with the same feelings.

I didn't care for Arrival that much. Moana started off slightly weak, but picked up enough to score a 7/10 from me.

Same here. I did think, though, that the lip-syncing wasn't well done, and the music didn't meet my expectations. They weren't bad, though.
Also, Moana's plot reminded me of Kubo and the Two Strings'. That isn't awful considering that the "hero's journey" plot is a common one, but I think that Kubo did it better. I connected more to the characters and morals of the story in the latter movie than the former; I felt as though Moana's were too familiar, so I didn't care about them and thus didn't enjoy the movie much. That's probably just me, though. Does anyone else share this sentiment?

The scene where they go to retrieve the fish hook from the shell of the turtle reminded me a lot of the scene in Kubo when they need to retrieve the sword from the skull of the giant skeleton.

I thought so, too! It's not likely that one of them copied off the other, but the resemblance was really uncanny.

I'm glad others have picked up on the Kubo comparisons, because i was also thinking that. Complete coincidence but rather strange. Kubo was a far better film in my opinion though, such a beautiful film
