The one thing that irked the hell outta me!!!!!!

Thought it was a good film. A little too similar to the "Frozen" format with a fresh coat of paint. Overall 7.5/10

But the one thing that really bugged me was at the end when Moana went to confront the Lava Monster for the 2nd time.

What reason did Maui have to just randomly show up in the nick of time to help Moana? Him and Moana had that argument after the 1st confrontation and then he just flew off in a rage. How did he know she was going back?

Felt like a scene was missing. It isn't a long film so I felt the filmmakers could have had a quick 3 minute scene to explain where he went and why he returned. His return would have made more of an impact I feel.

dude, have you ever seen a movie before? lmao
deus ex machina, bro....

It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack. Not rationality...

Obviously. Doesn't matter. It was an easy fix.

Did you also wish for a scene in 'A New Hope' showing Han Solo talking it over with Chewie about what they should do? Or were you satisfied enough just to see Han return and shoot Darth Vader's ship into a tailspin?

reply

Maybe I would if I actually cared about Star Wars.

This.

We don't need to be shown where he went or why he came back, because we know why he came back. We saw it in the development of the movie. He was brash and upset about his hook, but we knew he would return to Moana because we saw the bond they had formed.

Actually, the scene were Han and Chewie talk about what they should do was done... in the Phineas & Ferb Star Wars episode (with some help from Isabella)
Enjoy! :)

There may not have been a scene explicitly explaining why he went back but the movie had been setting it up all along.
He didn't want to help in the beginning but the longer he was with Moana the more inspired he became until he was finally a hero and ready to do what was needed. His leaving was just doubt because he lost his weapon but it was obvious he would return because of the way his character had developed.

And there's always the easiest explanation that this is how pretty much all final battles in movies go. The hero starts out strong, loses big in the middle, then regroups and comes back to win.

And trust me I get that. I just feel they could have given the audience a quick scene showing that. Like he just stopped somewhere to try to strengthen the cracks in his hook in some way for when he returns. Or even explain that why he was so harsh to Moana was to get her to go home so that when he went back to face the Lava Monster he wouldn't have to worry about protecting her. Only for his plan to fall through because the Ocean clued him in that Moana was in danger. Just for me, something as simple as that would have made the film great instead of just being good. The great films fill in those little details.

Maui went back for the same reason any doubting hero turns back: he cares more than he lets on. You just need to watch the rest of the movie to know Maui had grown to care about Moana, just like she grew to care for him.

Could they have included a scene where Maui decides to turn back? Sure. Would it have added anything? Not really. Maui spoke out in anger. He didn't believe what he said. That much is obvious from the rest of the movie. He was simply angry at losing his hook and feeling hopeless.

In Frozen, there's a scene where we see Kristoff talking with Sven about going back. Was the scene needed? Would I have been shocked to see Kristoff racing back to Anna without that scene? Nope. The scene is fine but it isn't necessary. Turning back is consistent with Kristoff's development. The same applies with Maui.

Agree. I practically had to stop myself from rolling my eyes when Maui showed up, out of the blue, so coincidentally.
It was meant to be a shocking horah moment that fell incredibly flat becauae they didn't show the complete 180 turn.

I disagree. I don't think it was supposed to be shocking. Anyone who had seen the rest of the movie and how he progressed through it would know he wouldn't leave Moana to die against Te Ka.

reply

It was definitely a horah moment made for people to say "yay!". Which no one did because it fell flat. Of course he wasn't gonna leave Moana, they became friends at this point and it's a Disney movie, but because everyone knew he was gonna come back the separation felt stale just as the reunion did. This is all of course MY opinion.

His tattoo probably made him go back. It always seemed to take Moana's side.
