Pixellisation in Maui's tattoo textures

I never thought I'd see the day in modern CGI animation where pixels were visible in any one scene, and yet here we are: at some point, Maui is saying something about how the people thanked him for the coconuts he provided, and there is a closeup of one of his tattoos with a bunch of people cheering as Maui showers them with coconuts. Well, in that particular closeup, I could see the texture for the tattoo pixellating as it was so close, as in visible pixels showing up, as if they hadn't bothered to use a high enough resolution for the image. Why would that happen these days? I'm thinking it was an early rendered shot that wasn't improved later on.

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

But I thought his tatoos were hand-drawn...

Maybe they were, but they had to be digitised so they could be applied to a 3D model (Maui's body) for the CGI side of it.

It's not pixelation, it's the texture of Maui's skin.
