not doing great box office?
2 weeks in, i got to think Disney is a little dissapointed in the numbers. Its at 180 mill, worldwide... i bet it cost at least that much, just to make it. This ain't no Zootopia, its looking like.

shareIt cost $150 million to make.
shareRule of thumb is a movie needs to make twice its budget to be considered a success.
Even The Princess and the Frog, which was considered to be an underperformance which made Disney stop making 2D movies, still made over twice its budget worldwide. A 30 million profit isn't gonna blow any investor's mind. And we don't even know what Disney spent on marketing.

i heard its twice the budget to even break even.
The marketing costs are in the millions, plus theaters get half of the receipts. This film is still very much in the red, right now.
That's a good point there lil' B. I bet they regret pouring so much money into getting the Rock's hair to look so realistic.

Has it already been released in all the countries it's supposed to be released in?
shareNot yet.

I love the way you laugh.

I think you are right that Disney is disapponted in the international numbers(at least). One bright spot is that it is off to a good start in France, though.
Vaiana works very well; I expect he will cross the Frozen-Pocahontas bar of 5.6 millions tickets sold and fly to the 7.2 million bar from Aladdin. Young adults and family audience liked it.
220 millions $ US, and Aladdin US BO will be overtaken, kudos to Musker-Clements to succeed.
Excuse me, what? It's doing a fantastic job, especially in USA. Overseas it has yet to release in most markets, including Japan (where Frozen made tons of money, by the way).
shareI doubt they are disappointed. It was the second biggest Thanksgiving opening ever (behind none other than Frozen). And its release isn't supposed to be like Zootopia. Zootopia was released in March, so it was frontloaded, as is expected. This movie was released around Thanksgiving. Movies release then are less frontloaded, but typically have good legs (unless they get bad word of mouth) because of the holidays. Moana is doing great, lagging just a bit behind Frozen domestically, and off to a solid start in France and China. And, as Hold_the_door pointed out, it won't be released in Japan until March of next year (a similar marketing strategy as Frozen), and Frozen made a slaughtering in Japan.
shareUh actually Jan-March is greatly considered to be a dead time for films, during a time period that studios release films they don't expect to be very big before the spring and summer blockbuster season begins.
Also Zootopia wasn't front loaded as it didn't have huge weekend drops! It's first weekend for example was only -31% vs Moana's -50%! Zootopia's second weekend was even smaller with -27%, third weekend was higher with a -35% drop, but the forth was only -19%!
Zootopia didn't infact face a -50% drop till its 10th week! Moana however did on its 2nd. So no, Zootopia wasn't in any sort of way frontload. For that to of happened it would of had to open well above 100 million for it to reach 341 million.
By day 15 of Frozen's wide release, it had $140 mil. Zootopia had $173 mil. It was more frontloaded. Comparison's:
Day 5: Frozen - $93.9 mil; Zootopia - $85 mil
Day 10: Frozen - $109.4 mil; Zootopia - $144 mil
Day 15: Frozen - $140 mil; Zootopia - $173 mil
Day 20: Frozen - $166.4 mil; Zootopia - $213 mil
While Frozen had a higher initial burst, you can see that overall, Zootopia was much more frontloaded. Despite Zootopia being significantly higher on day 10, 15, and 20, Frozen finished with almost $60 mil more domestically, because its legs carried it through the holidays. Frozen finally caught up to Zootopia's pace on Day 41 of release. Its legs carried it past Zootopia, through January and February.
Now, I don't believe Moana will meet Frozen as far as gross. Frozen was a phenomenon. But its track will look much more similar to Frozen than it will to Zootopia, because Moana has similar marketing strategies and was released at the same time as Frozen was. Zootopia was a whole different kind of beast.
Nice analysis, Zaphenzo!
