Maui's Cave

Maui didn't know that Moana was going to be able to escape his cave.

There was no food or water (unless it rained) in there. Moana wasn't a magical being like he was. So...basically he left her in there to die?

This bothered me...wondering if anyone else thought about it.

Pretty much.

He also threw her into the ocean to drown. She only lived because the ocean was on her side.

When she fell in the realm of monsters, his response was. "Well, she's dead. Oh well, let's go get my fishhook."

So for most of the movie he didn't care if she died.

He reveals later that his parents abandoned him so I suppose his mild sociopathic behavior stems from that.

I don't think it qualifies him as sociopathic. He just has a different perspective on human life since he's thousands of years old. He's immortal, she's not. To him, humans die all the time so what's the big deal.

It would be like you swatting a fly.

reply

True. Never thought about it like that.

Maui, when Moana meets him, is not really a good/nice guy.

But he was not born that way, he was made that way from his life experiences. Being abandoned by his parents, than being abandoned by people in general, after he was doing something to help them out.

Add to that he's had a LOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG time to sit a stew about all of this. When he meets Moana, his only thoughts are: She's a way off of the island he's been stuck on for 1,000 years.
