To sing, or not to sing
I like Moana a lot, but I thought the songs were pretty weak (even the main one). Anyone else think it might have been a better movie if it wasn't a musical?

shareAbsolutely not.
shareI found the songs perfect. I think the music is even better than Frozen's.
shareI can see why people question this and call the songs forgettable. I'll admit that they aren't as catchy as Frozen's songs, but I feel most of them fit really well into the movie. I personally like them a lot, though they're not exactly earworms.
Nope, the songs were quite excellent actually and I could see this at least being a top ten Disney soundtrack for me.
"If life is getting you down and needs uplifting, then please come dance with me!"
I really prefer the Pixar style: no songs. But okay, this is Disney, so songs are expected, I just wish they'd use two or three songs, tops.
shareDisney makes movies that aren't musicals as well. They always have and always will. Non-musical WDAS movies go as far back as Fantasia and Bambi, and are as recent as Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. But they also make musicals, in which only having 2 or 3 songs would not make any sense.
shareI don't think it would have been better, but I do think the movie is actually made by the score and not the character songs. The only songs I would never cut would be "I am Moana/Song of the Ancestors" because of the way it's presented. I love the vocalization in the back while she sings because it's a great way to symbolize her finding strength in her predecessors while facing her own future. Also, We Know The Way" is too wonderful to cut because sailing is a HUGE part of the culture (even now with things like the Hokulea and paddling clubs in every town).
But the more Polynesian influenced songs from the score gave me gooseflesh and really brought me into her world. Especially, "Tulou Tagaloa" (the song the movie opens with) and "An Innocent Warrior" (where baby Moana first meets the Sea) are stunning and moving, but so short! I love "Voyager Tagaloa", too.
These are all on YouTube if anyone wants to hear them in their entirety. :)
It was a hell of alot better than Frozen's.
With Frozen only a couple songs stood out to me, Moana on the other hand had almost the entire soundtrack stuck in my head.

I feel the opposite way: in Moana, only "You're Welcome" and "Shiny" stood out to me as individual songs. The rest, while nice, seemed to blend into the soundtrack as a whole. I can't imagine them being performed outside the film itself.
Frozen, however, had lots of well-defined standalone songs. I didn't like the central showstopper "Let It Go", but it was catchy.
I LOVED the music in this movie (I'm downloading them right now, actually) None of the songs annoyed me like some of the songs in Frozen did, and each song just had so much passion in it. I really do love Lin Manuel's style of music, so that might have swayed me, but I really enjoyed the soundtrack.
