I'm interested by the Finding Dory and Trolls snubs, with Sing making it before it even came out.

Finding Dory and Trolls snubs

Finding Dory- I did think it would get a Nom... I think the Oscars might nominate it.
Trolls- I thought the movie was great, didn't see it as a contender.

Sing?
That might make it an even bigger box office hit. Bad news for Moana's box office, it won't be able to keep up.

I didn't see Trolls, so I was surprised by the snub mainly because from what I've heard, it was relatively well received, not based on my own opinion of it. FD, I was surprised because of both. I didn't see it as a main contender personally, but figured it would at least get a nomination. And as far as the acclaim, critics reviewed it very well.

reply

Finding Dory didn't have anything ground breaking or original to it. It was a sequel that wasn't as good as the original (in an incredible year for animations).

The Oscars do LOVE Pixar, if they will get a nomination it is deserved-from the technical look on it, something the Oscars look more into. Finding Dory is a Pixar movie, their animation is ahead of everyone, technically.

Pixar do have two INCREDIBLE films running for animated short "Piper" and "Borrowed Time". Piper has some ground breaking animation, it looks real.

Trolls? it was a fun movie, but again it's a very strong year.

reply

If the Globes didn't nominate it I wouldn't be surprised if the Academy doesn't follow.

reply

The Academy is very generous towards Pixar (Brave)
They also tend to look more at the artistic/Technical side- where Pixar is ahead

reply

Well they have been in the past. But to my knowledge Dory hasn't picked up any credible award yet, while other Indy films have that could very likely take its place. Also let us not forget that Dory is a sequel and other than Toy Story The Academy hasn't been very friendly to them in the past. I think the whole it's Pixar it's going to get nominated by default has run it's course with WDAS now breaking new ground.

reply

I agree, I didn't see Trolls as a contender, although it was a beautifully executed and delightful film. I'm shocked, however, at the nomination for Sing and no mention of Kung Fu Panda3? Or are sequels against Golden Globe policy? I'm not surprised Dory wasn't on the list. Again, visually beautiful and a fun story, but not really award worthy. Yeah - Kubo made the list!

I never love Kung Fu panda myself.
They usually don't like sequels(same with the Oscars)- with the exception of Toy Story 3. But that movie was on a different level, one of Pixar's best+ Toy Story was out before there was an "Animated feature" catagory.

I'm not surprised Dory wasn't on the list. Again, visually beautiful and a fun story, but not really award worthy.

Because of the visual and technical side, where Pixar is still ahead of everyone, they might get an Oscar nom.

Dory was beautiful, no doubt, but not more so than Trolls or KFP3. Trolls was amazing with their arts and crafty world and soft, tangibly fluffy hair. Everything felt felted or handmade. It was brilliant. And KFP3 was beyond spectacular with it's 2D sequences, beautiful animation of pandas and their village, and the amazing spirit realm. If anything, each installment of KFP surpassed the one before it and KFP3 was the most spectacular of all.

Pixar is ahead when it comes to animations: they were the first to move to 3d animated films... Look what they did with Piper. Phenomenal!

I agree, but technically Pixar is still ahead. And they will be for quite a few years, at least. Just check Hank (The Octopus).

I haven't seen KP3- mainly because i didn't like the first 2. For me, they aren't as memorable as other animations.

Also, at the end of the day it's adults who vote... Pixar has some deep and heavy themes, you don't see animated films go to this extent usually.

reply

The thing about Trolls is that it's a jukebox musical. I see it as a "dangle your keys in front of your kids"'movie that adults can stand to some degree. In the end though, for me at least, it's nowhere near that of Zootopia, Kubo, or Moana.

Sing I'm hearing is average.

reply

Well, I was expecting Finding Dory to get nominated instead of Sing, but who knows? Maybe Illumination has made something really good.

reply

Yeah, maybe. It's hard to tell from the previews, although the music looks like fun. Do the Globes try to spread the nominations among studios or among types of films?

reply

Wow, Sing over Dory.

I prefer Moana to Zootopia, but Zootopia will probably win.

But who cares, either way the award goes to Disney's in house animation.

reply

So far Kubo and the Two Strings is my favourite. It had great visuals and a great story. Moana was also great. I've yet to see Zootopia yet but I keep hearing great things about it.

I notice Secret Life of Pets isn't on there. ;) Haha
