Sing! Thoughts?

Sing has been a bit of an ongoing argument with some (including myself) thinking it might just be a box-office force! And to my surprise today it was nominated for a Golden Globe knocking off Finding Dory.

What is everyone's thoughts on this out of curiosity? This is definitely not a film I care to see but I feel it might of been a bit underestimated in it's box office potential. Seems it's gone from being trash to a possible Oscar nominated film over night! This can't hurt it's chances! And they will very likely use this as a marketing strategy now!

The reason for posting this here is if this film does become another Minions or even SLOP with R1 already playing and possibly even Assassin's Creed this will very likely damage Moana box office gross.

As you know, I've always thought it was going to be a mighty headwind ahainst Moana. Now it's even more formidable after these noms.

Indeed! I always felt people were underestimating this film. The same thing happened with Zootopia and then SLOP. Both times MANY were making perditions of low low box office performance and well we see what happened!

Now we've got Sing, this one is a bit odd because I expected it to do well to begin with but now we've got The Golden Globes into play all of a sudden and suprise, surprise I'm seeing people say well this film might play better than I expected!

This can't be good for Moana! If they'd been released at the same time I'd say it likely wouldn't of mattered, but Mona is only going to resting around 160 million or so at the time Sing hits the ground running! It will very likely cut it's legs off at that point and where Frozen and TS2 had massive gains throughout the Christmas holidays Moana might take a nose dive.

And not only domestically but internationally also! Other than notably France, Sing will be paying in many of Mona's big markets at the same time and also having to share screen space with R1 in practically every single country at the same time.

Yup.

I dunno. Golden Globes and Oscars nominations don't match all the time. I find both ceremonies look at their credentials differently in some respects. I find, if anything, the last nomination to be the wild card nomination.

As I mentioned in another thread, I don't think the Golden Globes will affect it that much. The average movie goer doesn't check awards when deciding what movie to go see, especially when deciding between which family movie to go see. And while the GGs apparently see it as worthy, critics don't seem to agree. It's only got a 75% RT score, with an average score of 6.9.

It definitely won't be another Minions, as that movie only did so well because it had created the mania with the only actually good film Illumination had, Despicable Me, and just capitalized off of it. And Frozen had The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug to contend with, and didn't falter at all. So I don't see why Moana should falter much in the face of Rogue One. Sure, R1 is going to be a bigger smash than DoS, but not so much that Moana should just fall off the face of the planet and stop making money altogether. So, as I've mentioned many times before, I don't see Moana suffering much going into the holiday season.

Do kids actually read Rotten Tomatoes scores? Much less the average score. And actually make a judgement of watching a film based on what a critic says? Minions is 51% on Rotten Tomatoes and SLOP is 74% and it didn't change the outcome a single bit! Both were absolute huge success.

My thought on the Golden Globe being helpful is because of two reasons. First is no one expected it so people are going to want and see why. Secondly is psychology, if you put an award name I front of it, it will sell more! And people are generally familiar with the Golden Globes and kids are going to see this as a big thing! Rest asured the studio is going to market the hell out of that now so everyone knows that Sing was nominated for a major award!

I would say a ton more people use Rotten Tomatoes than look at Golden Globe NOMINATIONS (it's not like it will win). Heck, the only nominations last year that made over 250 million were The Good Dinosaur and Inside Out.

I don't think anyone expects it to win. It's just the fact it was nominated and wasn't expected is the point I'm trying to express. Ever read the front of a DVD case? Practically everyone of them use awards, star ratings etc as a marketing tool. Even if it's just a nomination it doesn't matter and they'll still use it. Why might you ask? It's phycology! When you put an award name of something even if it is crap people will buy it. This is the point I'm trying to make. Pay attention to upcoming adds and see if they don't use this. I bet you they will because they know it works.

Haven't seen it, therefore I cannot comment on it.
