Why is there no religion based around Maui?

Maui is like the polynesian equivalent of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed and Krishna. He should have his own religion with millions of adherents worldwide.

Maui is more akin to Sun Wukong and Heracles than those people. Many of his actions are selfish, not heroic or self-sacrificing. So no one would want to follow in the footsteps on an idiotic hero. Hence no religion to follow in his footsteps.

You mean it's because colonists converted them

reply

Despite the fact that the story of Maui has been unchanged for 1,000 years. He still died between a womans razor sharp legs.

In hindsight, the film DID elaborate Maui did have respect and a follow as a Demigod up until he BETRAYED the people by stealing an artifact that was detrimental to their own survival that led up to Maui's exile.

reply

Because he's a demi-god, not a god... more like Heracles/Hercules than the other figures you mention.
Because the religion he is part of and the people who believe in it were nearly wiped from the earth by European/Christian forces. They were killed by disease and war, those who didn't die were converted, first voluntarily and then forcibly, to Christianity. They didn't have a written language, and when their countries were taken away from them, teaching their language became illegal. You might want to look into the history of Hawaii for just a start as to what happened.
Also, for the most part none of the Polynesian cultures were particularly into going out to conquer new lands or convert people to their religion. They were a fairly small populace spread out over a wide area with very little means to communicate and, over time, vast differences in language and culture even within their geographical area.

As he said in his song, "There's no need to pray, it's okay, you're welcome"
