Question about the ocean

Apparently Moana's father found an unforgiving ocean when he tried to go past the reef. Same thing for Moana the first time she tried - she very nearly drowned.

But isn't the ocean on Moana's side for the rest of the movie? Why did it let her nearly drown that time?

reply

It didn't nearly let her drown. It brought her to where she needed to be.

I meant the first time. When she says her father was right and almost gives up on going to the ocean entirely.

Mind you, I like the scene a lot. It does a good job of showing Moana is in over her head and her father has a point. I just wonder why the ocean would allow that to happen.

reply

It might be because she needed to find the cave with the boats/ catamaran(s) first. She uses one of those to successfully cross the reef.

reply

Nice! That makes a fair bit of sense.

To extend upon that, the ocean wants her people to voyage again. The canoe she first took out is not built for traveling against or on waves. It's not stable enough in rough waters because of its narrow hull even with the pontoon. Those other boats had more surface area and therefore more stability to take on the rough nature of the ocean. So, no big boats meant no open water voyaging.

reply

Yep, that's all true! I hadn't really factored the nature of the boats in. Thanks.

The ocean is not such powerful as you think. Its abilities are very simple. The ocean could not save Moana at the very beginning because the ocean could not prevent wind => wind creates waves => waves crash Moana's boat. And that's why :)

I was wondering about this and tbh her boat sucked. I mean she sucked too but the boat just made her job way harder.
