Holding amazing against Rogue One

Rogue One is opening to an impressive 140-150 million, but Moana is the real story here. Despite being against a 4 quadrant movie that is probably the hottest franchise in the world right now, Moana is looking to hold at a stunning 20-25%, for a 13.8-14.8 million weekend.

While it's not a perfect indicator of anything, it shows that there is still interest in Moana against other family-friendly movies, and gives even more signs of a good hold against Sing.

reply

I hope you are right about it possibly holding well against Sing, troyplafond.

reply

Ehhh...11.6 million for the weekend.. not so hot.

reply

It's looking like it'll drop more than Friday estimates projected, but it'll probably go up, the Saturday jump looks way too low. Most family movies jump 100%+ from Friday to Saturday. Also, both last year against The Force Awakens and this year against Rogue One, just about every movie dropped around 50%+, with the exception of platform/limited release movies with extreme Oscar buzz/big theater expansions (La La Land, Jackie, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, The Danish Girl, Carol). Moana even holding this well is still fantastic and better than anyone could have reasonably predicted.

reply

-37% compared to the -22% they were saying. Going to be interesting next weekend!

reply

This weekend still isn't over. Still estimates for both Saturday and Sunday, and their Saturday is rather hard to believe IMO, as almost every family movie jumps at least 100% from Friday to Saturday besides opening weekend.

reply

Those numbers come from Disney and normally they are pretty close. Generally what happens is films atcually slide a few thousand less but it has occasionally happened that a film gains a bit more but that's not the norm.

reply

Yeah, I know all that, the prediction just seems wonky to me. As I outlined in my first response to QueenFanUSA though, this is still a great result for the weekend for Moana, considering both last year and this year, everything in enough theaters to be notable that wasn't a buzzy awards movie dropped at least 50%, and many 60% or more. Even some buzzy awards movies dropped bad (Arrival at 50%, sharpest of its run, Nocturnal Animals at 56%, Hacksaw Ridge at 61%, Miss Sloane at 75%, Loving at 67.5%). It's interesting that the movie least affected by Rogue One is Moana, and I think it's a good sign of things to come.

reply

Let's hope, troyplafond!

reply

Ended up below initial projections that I posted, but higher than yesterday. 12.726 million, drop of 31.3%, strongest hold of all movies to not gain theaters in the top 15 by over 15%.

reply

I saw that, troy!!!

Nice bit of good news.

reply

Rogue One has passed Moana in just 2 days damm!!
Hope this little film can at least reach $500
I was hoping it could surpass that garbage of
Suicide Squad :(

reply

No one with even a sliver of a brain would expect Moana to outpace Rogue One. OF COURSE Rogue One has already passed Moana. It's STAR WARS for goodness sake. And one incredible movie, at that.

reply

It's Star Wars what did you expect

"Think of it. 90% of the population united against a common enemy. We'll be unstoppable!"

reply

It has already made far more than $500...

reply

I feel like Moana will do what the little mermaid did.. Play for a very long time and stay in the top ten even well after the holidays.

reply

Yeah, so far, the only movie that has beaten Moana has been Rogue One. It was number one every day from it's opening to the 16th when Rogue One opened. And from the 16th til Monday, it's been number 2. No numbers for yesterday yet, that I can find.

reply

I agree. It is a lovely, exciting film. The Grandchildren loved it! I did too!
