I kind of hated the Kakamora for the minion vibe and think the sequence could have been cut.
But I feel better about it because they are a real part of the folklore:

Yeah, they are a part of the actual mythology, though they apparently aren't supposed to all be quite as small as the movie made them out to be. From what others have said, though, it could possibly be a nod to Mad Max. I have never seen any of those movies, though, so I can't personally vouch for that.
