Sing will be at nearly 180 million DOMESTIC next weekend

While that zapheno guy and troylapond are probably crying themselves to sleep for doubting sing, i at least knew the truth along with queenfanusa.

reply

I never thought that Sing wouldn't be successful. I knew Sing was going to be very successful, and have never once argued the appeal or success of it. All I'm saying is that Moana isn't flopping or doing any worse this past week because of it.

reply

Plus, I don't care if Sing is successful or not. I'm actually going to see Sing tomorrow morning. As a matter of fact, it almost certainly will oitgross Moana. I would be surprised to see otherwise.

I like the Despicable Me franchise besides Minions. Watching the Secret Life of Pets tonight On Demand.

I don't see why there must be a mindset of "one or the other".

reply

While I enjoy keeping up with box office earnings and debating about it, I really don't care enough to "cry myself to sleep". As for getting to nearly 180 domestic next weekend, yeah, it probably will get 80 million when you include this and next weekends and the week inbetween. It'll still be way behind Moana at that point, and will be tailing off viciously. So I don't see how that's really a big deal.

reply

@Whoaaa

If Sing hits 300 million domestic(which it certainly may)...I think I'll cry.

reply

Btw, before it's release, Moana was projected to end up with 300 million domestic by most prognosticators.

reply

why.

reply

Why? Illumination being a dominant force in animation pulls the industry in the wrong direction. Disney may start asking themselves why are they pouring all of these resources into creating technological/visual marvels like Moana when they barely break even financially. They look at Illumination cranking out one cheapy/lowbrow crapfest after another with gargantuan global box-office and merchandise flying off the shelves.

reply

If Disney was going to change course, they would have done it after DreamWorks became well-known.

Certainly Illumination has been more successful than DreamWorks, but DreamWorks have been making Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda to great success much longer than Illumination has been around. I see no reason for them to change.

reply

Disney did change course when shrek came out and their films started flopping. Thats what led to sh!t like chicken little , valiant, and meet the robinsons. It was only when audiences briefly got tried of that crap and started gravitating towards classics like frozen and zootopia. Even dreamworks got somewhar tired for a bit and the kung fu panda films were awesome along with how to train your dragon.

Illumination then lowers the bar and idiots call them groundbreaking. Then, even dreamworks goes back to making crap like trolls and home again and audie ces respond more to those than actual classics like good dinosaur and moana

reply

Also, one successful franchise and 2 big hits (one of which we haven't even seen if it will perform well or not overseas) is very different then "cranking one hit out after another".

Let's see...

Despicable Me
Despicable Me 2
Minions
The Secret Life of Pets
Sing!(c'mon...if this doesn't have similar international success I'll eat my hat!)

All at a budget of $75 million apiece.

How would you describe it?

reply

One successful franchise and 2 big original hits, one with an unclear international fate.

reply

As opposed to DreamWorks, which has one of the most successful animated franchises of all time (Shrek), several other mid-level franchises in How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar, a potential franchise in The Croods, and single film successes such as Home and Trolls (both of which could still theoretically become franchises).

Yes...and now it's owned by Universal and under the leadership of Chris Melenandri(sp?). Universal will be on par with Disney without question but with a decidedly different strategy that pulls the industry down. I'm no fan of DreamWorks, but I concede they have done some good things and their quality standards are above that of Illumination. Visually, their stuff can be top notch and that's a testament to the resources they have allotted for the production of their films.

reply

My argument is DreamWork's ongoing success alongside Disney's shows that Disney likely will not diverge from their course due to Illumination's success.

reply

Disney did it before when shrek became a hit and was making cgi crappy comedies until 2009.

reply

Dreamworks has the occassional highlight such as kung fu panda or how to train your dragon but even before illumination essentially took over dreamworks management, they went back to making sh!t like trolls.

reply

Franchise or not...every entry leaves Moana in the dust. And how about the next entry in that franchise Despicable Me 3 next summer? It may end up being the biggest animated film of all time. And then The Grinch Who Stole Christmas for November...that may chew up and spit out any animated film in it's path.

reply

I'm not arguing that Illumination has been successful, I'm just saying that early DreamWorks was also very successful, and Disney never went down their path.

If Despicable Me 3 is more successful than Frozen (or even Minions) I will be thoroughly shocked. It won't even be the biggest family movie of the year, that'll be Beauty and the Beast.

Why in the world would that "shock" you?

It won't even be the biggest family movie of the year, that'll be Beauty and the Beast.

LOL. Thanks for the laugh, troy! If you say so. I guess we can revisit this next year.

reply

Jungle Book made about as much as Despicable Me 2. Beauty and the Beast is more well known than Jungle Book, and Minions poor reception will drag it down. Say what you will about Illumination, but many people like their movies, which wasn't the case with Minions.

I would argue that Jungle Book had more 4-quadrant appeal and will be surprised if Beauty hits Jungle Book's heights. Boys were just as excited as girls for it and I can't see that happening for BATB.

Sadly, I am well aware of that.

reply

You cut out the important part, which is that Minions was still poorly received.

Did Jungle Book appeal to younger girls? I honestly don't know.

reply

Its critic proof and families love that crap. Despicable me 3 will do at least a billion.

Cars 3 may be a huge loser as cars 2 is more "poorly" received by families than minions.

reply

Minions poorly received? It DESTROYED Inside Out, a far superior movie. People couldn't stop singing the praises of those yellow freaks, while most had nothing but the worst to say about Inside Out. It nearly became the greatest animated film of all time, financially.

reply

I don't mean commercially, I mean in terms of critic and audience reviews. Many people who saw it hated it.

reply

And many people voted for trump too. Doesnt mean he isnt despicable.

reply

I know you want to forget chicken little and valiant along with meet the robinsons but disney did make them in response to shrek.

reply

I actually did forget about those. I was looking at Walt Disney Animation Studio, and both Chicken Little and Valiant were before that according to box office mojo. But the fact that they flopped anyways shows that Disney is most successful when doing their own thing.

reply

when they barely break even financially.

I am pretty sure they have made good profits on most of their recent animation films.

Adventure is out there!

reply

Maybe not 300 million but certainly 250 million sing will hit. Moanas just about out of gas and will lose to sing.

reply

Actually, Sing will hit 180 million by the end of Monday. By the end of next weekend it will be well over $200 million domestic and blowing past Moana in short order.
