Movies that cost 150 million + making under 500 million getting a sequel

Mad Max Fury Road: 378.9 million on a 150 million budget

Wreck It Ralph: 471.2 million on a 165 million budget

Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: 419.7 million on a 225 million budget

Pacific Rim: 411 million in a 190 million budget

Mission Impossible 3: 397 million on a 150 million budget

Star Trek: 385 million on a 150 million budget

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: 373 million on a 150 million budget

X-Men: First Class: 353 million on a 160 million budget

Thor: 449 million on a 150 million budget

Batman Begins: 374 million on a 150 million budget

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: 413 million on a 150 million budget

Star Trek Into Darkness: 467 million on a 190 million budget

How to Train Your Dragon: 494 million worldwide on a 165 million budget

A sequel isn't made unless a movie is considered profitable. Ignoring the fact that Moana is almost certainly going to pass 500 million worldwide, it's going to end up in a range that generally proves to be clearly profitable for movies. It's going to end above Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. It's likely going to end up around How to Train Your Dragon. It's probably going to be above every damn movie on this list.

And that's before accounting for the albums and merchandising that have/will be sold.

No but continue to talk about how much of a flop Moana is and how it won't make Disney any money, ignoring all bounds of logic and sense.

reply

I've yet to call it a "flop". I do say that it is an underperformer and box-office disappointment.

As far as this film only costing 150 million..I simply don't believe that . Boxofficemojo won't even list an estimated budget.

reply

Just because boxofficemojo doesn't list the budget, doesn't mean that the budget is incorrect. There are plenty of movies in this list that have budgets up to 200 million and still scored sequels. However, considering the costs of Zootopia and Frozen, I see no reason not to believe it.

Wreck it ralph did flop with a 250 million total budget. Only reason its getting a sequel is because of a pay AND play contract disney signed with john c reily and the directors.

1. Unconfirmed budget
2. Convienently ignores every single other example

reply

Cause the others were true.

Which shows there's plenty of precedent for a heavily marketed movie to merely double or do slightly more than double its production cost and be deemed successful.

The problem with your figures is this budget is only production costs! This day doesn't at all account for the many other fees the studio must pay. Here's an article from Deadline covering the costs and profits from Inside Out. It's the closest I could find for a companion even if Moana will make less.

As you can see the production cost is only a small part of the expense.

As for the rest of these films one won the Best Picture Oscar, Wrek it Ralph is from Rich Moore the same director that just made a billion dollar award winning and praised film, and many of the others are from franchises with a strong fan base. Some films are simply made to sell junk also and they keep making them no matter how bad they are! Cars is a good example of this, it has never been huge in the box-office but it sells a crap load of merchandise so it got it's on land over at Disneyland and has yet another sexual on the way!
