Kinda OT: Will Disney Do Something with Percy Jackson?

It's OT because it's not Moana, but only kinda because it does still have to do with Disney. Are there any Percy Jackson book lovers here? If so, is there a chance that Disney does something with the series being put to film or TV? Anyone who's read the books and seen the movies knows that Fox took the Percy Jackson name, dragged it through the mud, crapped on it, tore it to shreds, peed on it, put it through a woodchipper, and stomped on it for good measure, then put it on film. Seriously, that was by far the least faithful adaptation I've ever seen, and all the changes they made SUCKED and made no sense.

BUT, Disney owns the Percy Jackson books. They are the publisher. So, is there a chance that Disney might decide to revive the PJ film franchise by rebooting it and actually making it decent? Or is there a chance that they, as some have suggested before, make an animated, serialized TV show for it? I mean, honestly, anything would be better than the utter crap that Fox made us watch.

reply

I don't want an animated one, but I think a tv series would be fantastic.

However, I'm more interested in seeing Heroes of Olympus than Percy Jackson.

reply

Really? That's interesting. I very much preferred PJ, though when I say a series of PJ or start making movies, I do mean continuing through HoO as well. Yeah, I think a TV series would be the better route, though rebooted movies are probably a more realistic possibility (if either are realistic at all).

reply

I think a show on Freeform would be a perfect fit, and maybe even more likely than a movie.

reply

That is a good point. Freeform's key audience is the same key audience as the PJ and HoO book series. I do like Freeform's lineup with Young and Hungry and Baby Daddy, and I think PJ would be an unbelievably amazing addition.

Also the CW could be a decent fit as well, they also have a primarily young adult audience. Most of their stuff is comic book shows, but they have done teen dramas based on books (The 100 is my favorite show).

reply

The CW would honestly be the best fit, since they have similar style shows with Arrow and the Flash, however I don't know if WB is willing to shell out money for the rights to it. At the moment, it wouldn't seem to most people to be a profitable franchise (though Disney should know how profitable it can be since they see all the paychecks that the books make). I do really like the CW, though. I absolutely love the Flash, I like Arrow alright (loved the first two seasons, but it's kinda been going downhill), and I do really like The 100 (but I'm behind currently. My wife and I just started season 3 on Netflix).

Have fun with that one. Season 3 is very, very controversial for reasons that you don't want spoiled, as well as an increasing sci-fi focus. For me, it is probably one of, if not the, best season of television I have witnessed.

reply

I definitely can see that it's going to head into crazy directions, with Clark on her own and Murphy and Jaha in the city of light. That is some high praise, though! Have you watched any of The Flash? I think it's one of the most well made television shows I've ever seen. It starts out really slow, honestly (with the first 4 or 5 episodes, I only kept watching because The Flash is my favorite superhero). However, around Ep 8 or 9, every episode has just been incredible.

reply

I'm nearing the end of season 2 right now, loving it.

reply

Season 2 has an incredible climax. It kind of causes season 3 to start off a little oddly, but I like where it's going.

Disney won't touch Percy Jackson with a 10 foot pole.

Not that Percy Jackson is a bad series, but Disney is looking for a cash cow. And anything less than that (outside of Disney Princess movies) will get dropped like a hot potato.

We can use the "Chronicles of Narnia" film series as a good example since it's also a young adult fantasy film series. "Narnia: The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe" grossed a hefty $745 million under Disney and they quickly greenlit a sequel. But when "Narnia: Prince Caspian" grossed only $419 million, Disney dropped the series for the third film. Fox picked up "Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader" and it grossed a similar $416 million, but Disney still hasn't shown interest in regaining the rights to the next Narnia film (Narnia: Silver Chair). It has since been picked up by Tristar Films and is in preproduction. The Narnia series has been a lot more successful than Percy Jackson at the box office.

Besides, Disney has already picked up another big budget young adult fantasy series, as "A Wrinkle In Time" is currrently in production with a $100+ million budget. That book adaptation is part of a five-book series that I'm sure they are eyeing as a franchise.

reply

Yes, Narnia was more successful than PJ at the box office, but that was because, as I mentioned, the films put forth by Fox were utterly awful. They basically took the core idea of demigods and the names, and threw everything else out the window and made their own plot that, quite frankly, sucked balls.
