Seeing him thrash a demigod like Maui around makes me wonder if he could handle Hercules just as well.
Maui tied his strength and identify to his hook. I think Maui is physically capable even without his hook to handle Tamatoa. But his pscyhosomatic power outage really messed him up and gave Tamatoa the upper hand.

Not really. Even Maui defeated him in the past (didn't he pull out one of Tamatoa's 'legs'? I seem to remember him saying such a thing).
Yeah, but he might've done that when he shapeshifted into an animal. Tamatoa was struck with fear when Maui regained his hook, but was then relieved when Maui failed to change properly.
shareMaui cut through Te Ka's arms like butter with his hook. I think that was what Tamatoa was really scared of. But when he saw Maui's shapeshifting flub and the shock on the demigod's face, he knew he could get the upper hand and tear him apart psychologically.
