The Storyline

I did not like how unrealistic her story was. It was just ok for me. I did lov the CG animation and the song the crab sang. I think the story could have been better.

reply

What was unrealistic compared to say a sister going off to redeem her ice magic-wielding sister...or a girl with incredibly long, magical healing hair galavanting off with some rogue...or hardworking woman turning into a frog because she kissed a prince, also transformed into a frog?

reply

The water was the main thing that made it unrealistic for me. The chicken also, how does a chicken fit into the picture period? Idk, I just thought it could have been way better. Just my opinion

reply

I could have done without the water tbh
It was pretty pointless.

reply

How unrealistic her story was? Was it any less unrealistic than other animated stories? Which ones do you like? Hers seemed rooted in a mix of myths from Polynesians. I found that really exciting.

reply

I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I didnt like it that much because it was all magic. The water and the chicken threw it off to me. Idk. I pretty much like all the Disney Princess movies except Brave! It was unoriginal to me. Same concept as Brother Bear just turned a different character.

reply

Was it all magic? Because that doesn't explain the times she failed..and failed hard.

reply

95% of it. N it's my opinion. Clearly you don't feel the same way and that's ok. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. I thought I was free to.express my opinion on here not be interrogated ?

reply

I'm trying to understand your opinion. I don't feel like you're expressing yourself very well. Perhaps if you elaborated on your position, you wouldn't be getting questions and feeling interrogated.

reply

It's one of those things were you know in your head but you can't express it. None of the newer Princess movies have been as good as the classics: Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc. They all have timeless stories that can be read/recreated over and over. But Moana, it's like she has to return an airloom to a God in order to save the island. But not really because the island isn't in danger she just wants to get off.

reply

So because Moana isn't a rehashed "find a prince(ss) and be happy film", it's not as good as the earlier ones? Also, did you even see the movie? Or did you come in after they realized their island was dying. How is that "not really" in danger??

reply

Because they lived that way for yrs and they knew their boundaries. Yes, I seen the movie when it first came out. What is your take on the film?

reply

But not really because the island isn't in danger she just wants to get off.

Her island was very much in danger. All their food was becoming diseased and sick... all of their hunting grounds for fish were coming up empty. Initially she actually made the decision to stay and NOT leave - to put aside her own wants for the sake of her people when she learned that in order to help her people she DID need to leave and try to restore the Heart of TeFiti (to stop her home (and her people - her family) from dying)

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

Ok, I can see why that wouldn't appeal to some. I think that was something I liked. Many cultures have myths involving magic - it was even in Mulan.

reply

I wouldn't call anything that happens in the movie "magic". Maui and Te Fiti are deities and Tagaloa (a Samoan God) is mentioned in the music at least twice. We know all Polynesian cultures have ocean related gods/spirits which is probably why the ocean is personified. To me, that's all spiritual or supernatural. To say that they're doing "magic" kind of cheapens it - especially with Maui and Tagaloa because they are actual mythological figures.

reply

Magic is an aspect of spirituality in many cultures and whether you term it magic or supernatural, if that is the thing that turns the OP off, it really doesn't matter. I agree with you that those aspects expressed the mythology of a culture and, like you, that appealed to me.

Every disney film has a degree of magic to it. The water here is realistic because that Nefertiti's stone or whatever it was called was a magical object that allowed the person holding it to control various things, including the water. The stone was pretty essential to the story, as was showing us what it could do. I don't understand why this should be a problem.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

That's not what the Heart of Te Feti did. Remember, that the ocean was shown as a sentient entity interacting with Moana (when she was a small child) before she was ever given the stone (it's the one that tried to give her the stone in the first place when it saw her show compassion for a creature of the ocean as she shielded the baby sea turtle from the birds that would have plucked it up as it made it's way towards the ocean).

Oh, yeah, I forgot that part. But it still doesn't change the fact that the stone is picking Moana by controlling the water

reply

There's no evidence that the stone is controlling the water, and plenty to show that, clearly, the water has a sentience/spirit... which is not unusual, for elements and also plant life, in many mythologies around the world. The water has a reason for choosing Moana, one of her people who wants to be a voyager again, to restore order. It gives the water purpose and joy, again, for people to be transported upon it. This is even explained in the movie, as the reason why the water chose her. When Moana tries to give up, she is seen yelling at the water to choose someone else, before the water takes the stone back.
