Should Moana really use a seashell for the stone pile?

Last I checked, you couldn't really stack a flat stone on a round seashell. So Moana has just made things harder for her successor.

Oh well, like father like daughter, I guess.

There was no successor, they moved on to a new island. The shell represents a temporary state of being.

But what about the whole "when it's time to find home, we know the way" thing?

Why would they need to move to a new island since their original island was fixed?

When that happened in the movie I looked at my friend and exchanged the good old "can she really do that?" Look.

Eventually they have to start a new pile anyways. They can't keep building on it forever. And it was already kind of high anyways.

It was representative of starting a new, nomadic existence. They had been grounded on the island for generations and were returning to the life of voyagers, there was no more intention to have that island as their home. There was nothing wrong with the island itself, it was about returning to their roots as sea people.
