I hate sidekicks in Disney movies

Frozen was alright but I hated Olaf so much, he was not funny and was just annoying. When I saw some previews of Moana with the rooster Hei Hei, I thought wow another dumb pointless sidekick that will get in the way of the story, but...

Hei Hei was indeed stupid but I absolutely loved him, he doesn't even have to say a word and he still ended up being hilarious.

Even the water was funnier than Olaf

Olaf can learn from it

Maybe you should change the subject to; "I hate Olaf"... for a second there, I thought you were going to include the likes of; Sebastian, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Genie, Timon & Pumbaa etc.

I wondered the same thing, if the OP was going down that road.

OP, I agree. In the previews, Hei Hei was irritating, but I enjoyed everything he added. Great comic relief!

Well, HeiHei is voiced by Alan Tudyk... who's just brilliant in anything!

I absolutely loved Olaf and Hei Hei both!

I'll be in the humble minority here and say that I didn't really enjoy what they did with the sidekicks in this movie. In interviews they talked about how they were worried about already overloading the movie with not one, but two of them (Hei Hei the rooster and Pua the pig). That really ended up showing in the final cut - Pua disappears for most of the movie, and Hei Hei is just there for comic relief.

The sidekicks that I've enjoyed in the past, however, have had a lot of emotional resonance with the mains. Think about Mushu's personal agenda and how it paralleled Mulan's own story of self empowerment. Or Sebastian's emerging friendship with Ariel driving the story significantly forward. And yes, even Olaf's selflessness towards Anna making him more than simply an obligatory secondary character for the kids.

Olaf rules!!!!

At least Maximus in Tangled was kinda cool.

one of my favorite sidekick in this movie was Pua but i was wondering why wasn't pua part of Moana and Maui journey

Olaf was actually a pretty tolerable sidekick and I thought he was going to be a one of those horribly annoying sidekicks from the ads. He's even more useful in the movie than those trolls.

Hei Hei was pretty funny too. Even though his stupidity can become quite annoying for me at times. Wish the pig could've also joined Moana on her adventures.

The only "cute sidekick" I loved in a Disney movie is Pascal in Tangled. He's fun to watch and he's got a brain that makes him useful. Hei Hei is funny for about thirty secondes. Olaf was painful to watch.
